ABOUT THE PROJECT
Bringing together a barbecue style and interior design aesthetic that captures the unique culture of Cleveland, Mabel’s BBQ owner and celebrity chef, Michael Symon worked closely with Richardson Design to specify reSAWN’s HAI shou sugi ban charred cypress interior wall cladding.
Richardson Design was tasked with combining the “…lived-in and worn characteristics of traditional barbecue restaurants…” with the true essence of Cleveland. HAI is burned slowly and skips the brushing process to create a distinct, black charred aesthetic that evokes images of a classic backyard barbecue while also maintaining a sharp, sleekness that perfectly complements high design concepts. With a restaurant that depends on a slow, smoky method of cooking, the specification of HAI shou sugi ban charred cypress interior wall cladding is an homage to the fire induced flavor of Mabel’s BBQ.
Chef Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ is a Cleveland-style barbecue restaurant located in the heart of downtown Cleveland. By incorporating Bertman’s ballpark mustard into the barbecue sauce, using Eastern European spices, and smoking meat over local fruitwood, Symon has created a barbecue style Clevelanders can call their own. Friends can kick back at communal picnic tables and feast on brisket, kielbasa, Cleveland kraut and pickles, pork ribs, and loads of pig parts with Eastern European inspired seasonal sides.
Richardson Design is devoted to its firm’s motto: ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. Their designers have the inherent ability to translate others’ words and thoughts into sketches. Whether in a focus group, board room, or store aisle setting, they’re able to quickly grasp the big idea and capture it’s essence through quick, gestural drawings. The concept sketches created in power ideation sessions often drive solutions that come to life in the marketplace.
