ABOUT THE PROJECT
These photos were taken while SANRAKU restaurant was under construction, final photos will be available soon.
TMDA selected reSAWN’s TORA shou sugi ban charred cypress for the wall cladding and slats for this Japanese restaurant. Jason Fritz of W.G. Fritz construction worked closely with reSAWN and TMDA to plan for this unique install. Slats were installed at a uniform 10° angle and anchored at the base, ceiling and partially up the slats using pine stained black to match the aesthetic of the restaurant. This provided the additional stability needed to keep the slats uniform and straight. The 10° angle creates a trompe l’oeil effect when viewed from different angles. It allows for diners to feel intimately separated from passersby while still allowing a glimpse into the restaurant. A similar effect was used over the doorways between the restaurant and the kitchen.
