About the Project
Saxbys Coffee’s new Dupont Circle location opened in late August after a three month hiatus from the metropolitan D.C. coffee scene. The new ownership group for the D.C. store purchased the Dupont Circle Saxbys in June of 2016, and moved the storefront two doors down to a bigger property. Architect Gensler-DC specified reSAWN TIMBER co.’s KIP wide plank, European white oak wall and ceiling cladding, which extends throughout a majority of the store.
Rather than focusing on only being a coffee company, Saxbys sees itself as “…a hospitality company fueled by great coffee.” (Saxbys Website) A large part of being hospitable is creating a welcoming atmosphere of warmth and comfort that starts with engaging employees and continues with thoughtful design elements. reSAWN’s KIP white oak provides a consistent, natural back drop for colorful, vibrant interior accents. The wrap around wall cladding and ceiling cladding–that only surround the cash register area–create two distinct parts of the coffee shop that have different design aesthetics.
Originating in Philadelphia, PA, Saxbys Coffee has spread to 9 different states and various college campuses. Similar to Saxbys’ corporate message, the Dupont Circle location considers itself a “community gathering space” according to co-owner and general manager Jim Hilson . The coffee shop is reaching out to local artists in an effort to include a physical representation of the neighborhood in its interior. Saxbys spokesman Justin Pizzi said, “In accordance with our entrepreneurial heartbeat, we actively serve our community and support the dreamers and the doers.” (Borderstan).
Saxbys’ mission to Make Life Better permeates through everything they do. They pair the local, friendly atmosphere of a neighborhood café with consistently delicious products you’d find at a big name coffee shop. Saxbys offers expertly roasted coffee products, all natural smoothies, hand-made sandwiches and made-to-order breakfast. They live their core values by remembering their guests’ names and orders, partnering with local businesses and volunteering in the community. (Saxbys Website)
