Butter Lane residence, otherwise known as the “6 Square House” sits next to a historic house in Bridgehampton, New York. The home consists of six 24’x24’ modules, each with a gabled geometry. The six modules were composed to create continuous momentum between the outer roof ridges, while the eaves of the roof flow up and down along curves to break away from tradition. The simple external materials show the complex structure of the roof from different points-of-view around the building. The composition of the roof extends into the interior of the house and naturally delineates 6 individual programs.
The 3,500 square foot house has two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, multiple living areas, an outside portico and a garage. The living spaces lead up to an inviting landscape: the main garden, the meadow and the pool house. Constructed in the center of the house, the kitchen is next to a “left-over” triangular court and opens to the portico that provides views of the countryside and beyond. Living spaces and the kitchen are linked to each other to act as a large open space that highlights the continuous flow of ruled ceiling geometry, while bedrooms feature scenic views of mature and gnarled trees for privacy. Standing in the middle of the building, one can glimpse silhouetted archetypal gables against the undulating geometries of the wall, highlighting the typology progression in a layering of forms.
“6 Square House” residence features CHARRED shou sugi ban FSC-Certified Accoya® wood. Accoya® wood comes with a 50-year warranty on the wood when used above ground; and a 25-year warranty when used at/below ground level. Shou sugi ban Accoya® is the combination of high-performance modified wood and an award-winning charred technique. Inspired by an ancient Japanese process that dates back to the 1700s, shou sugi ban enhances the exterior performance and aesthetic value of natural wood products. Due to the enhanced durability of Accoya®, a dense outer char layer allows the wood to seamlessly transition to a beautiful weathered look.
