Western Red Cedar
CUBISM features both charred and non-charred western red cedar in a range of colors including neutral and bold color tones. The planks are thoughtfully created through careful engineering of a highly improved 16’ plank. The engineered joinery adds graphic interest and a geometric pattern that both contrasts and compliments the natural grain of the cedar. Our CHARRED designs (CHOCHOL, 4TH DIMENSION & BAUHAUS) accentuate the wood grain and joinery and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light. We also offer SALLE 41, DIAMANT, GRIS, MARE, NO. 609, VILLA SAVOYE, PABLO, and PRINCET as a non-CHARRED way to capture a variety of different aesthetics from subtle white and gray tones to eye-catching bright colors.
reSAWN offers two types of cedar species, Atlantic White Cedar and Western Red Cedar, because of their prominence as sustainable exterior materials. From cedar shake shingles in the coastal North East to vertical grain raw cedar in the Pacific Northwest, Cedar has long been a favorite choice for wood exterior siding. Using a classic building material, reSAWN has modernized and expanded the possible design options with CHARRED shou sugi ban and weathered finishes.
WESTERN RED CEDAR
Western Red Cedar is a world renowned exterior siding material. The North American softwood is known for its natural beauty and durability. Its ability to accept various finishing techniques has made it an ideal species for reSAWN’s CHARRED shou sugi ban and WEATHERED finishes. Using both Clear Vertical Grain and Select Tight Knot grades, the charred and weathered products can be used in both interior and exterior applications.
ATLANTIC WHITE CEDAR
Grown along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida, atlantic white cedar is widely used as exterior siding material for its decay resistance and durability. We chose the domestic softwood for its ability to accept and hold finishes, which made it a perfect species for our weathered designs. The weathered designs provide an exterior material that will have minimal aesthetic variation throughout its installation.
- DURABILITY–Western red cedar and atlantic white cedar are naturally durable softwoods that creates extractives (Thujaplicans and Phenolics) that ward off decay caused by insects, water infiltration, and fungi. The extractives increase with age leading to a longer lasting product life cycle–especially in exterior applications.
- DIMENSIONAL STABILITY–WRC & AWC have very low shrinkage factors and are largely superior to all other coniferous softwoods in its resistance to warping, checking, and twisting.
- THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY–WRC’s and AWC’s low densities give them a high thermal insulating value because it contains a high proportion of cell cavities. In dry wood, these cavities are filled with air which is one of the best known thermal insulators. The R value is 1.35″ (34mm) of thickness.
- FIRE RESISTANCE–reSAWN’s CHARRED and WEATHERED CEDAR have a Flame Spread Index of 40 and a Smoke Developed Index of 140 to give it a Class B Rating. They can be fire treated to Class A for interior projects.
SELECT TIGHT KNOT
Knotty cedar presents a more rustic appearance and is typically supplied green (unseasoned) in the appearance and structural grades. When required, seasoning is achieved by air-drying except for grades of Light Framing and Structural Joists and Planks which are available kiln-dried.
CLEAR VERTICAL GRAIN
Clear cedar has a limited number of natural characteristics and is specified when appearance of the highest quality is desired. Clear grades of timbers are normally supplied green (unseasoned). When required, seasoning is achieved by air-drying.
