reSAWN’s NIGIRI shou sugi ban charred Accoya was used on this Okoboji lake house in Iowa. Designed by Substance Architecture, the home is unified under a single shed roof and was designed to preserve the large existing trees on the lot, and to create a front courtyard which allows views of the lake through the house from the street.

Substance Architecture is a collaborative design practice established in Des Moines, Iowa in 2005. The firm brings together the talent and expertise of some of the region’s most recognized design professionals engaged in the disciplines of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Design.

NIGIRI can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. It touches on the growing shift towards sustainably focused wood siding materials that require little maintenance and weather naturally in place.

Shou sugi ban Accoya® is the combination of high-performance modified wood and an award-winning charred technique. Inspired by an ancient Japanese process that dates back to the 1700s, shou sugi ban enhances the exterior performance and aesthetic value of natural wood products. Due to the enhanced durability of Accoya®, a dense outer char layer allows the wood to seamlessly transition to a beautiful weathered look.

All of our CHARRED shou sugi ban Accoya® products are FSC® certified and come with a 50-year warranty on the wood when used above ground; 25-year warranty when used at/below ground level.
