After a day marked by an abundance of wind and rain, the rising November sun shone through the trees onto the exterior of the Bellport, NY residence. On the other side of the house, the traditional, Long Island cedar shingles and reSAWN TIMBER co.’s MATSU charred shou sugi ban Accoya® remained in the shade.
Located in the coastal town of Bellport, the residence has a heavily wooded landscape and cul-de-sac neighborhood. The ocean is never too far away, though, with a stiff, salty sea breeze. It’s the same breeze that requires the installation of a high-quality exterior wood siding. Studio DB specified reSAWN’s MATSU charred shou sugi ban Accoya® for its superior exterior durability. A modified pine, Accoya® is a high performance wood that’s ideal for exterior applications because of its increased product lifespan, dimensional stability, lower maintenance frequency, and improved carbon sequestration. Additionally, Accoya® is FSC® certified and naturally renewable.
CHARRED using the ancient Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, MATSU has another layer of protection from water, insect, and rot. The burning of Accoya® takes the incredibly durable wood and carbonizes the exterior layer, which causes the cells to resist the moisture absorption process. MATSU is fully charred and then finished without brushing off the soft charcoal layer. This charcoal layer is a sacrificial wear layer that will flake over time to reveal blackened cypress underneath with variations in color from grey to brown tones and over time more grey tones.
Bellport is located on the South Shore of Long Island between Manhattan and the Hamptons. Noteworthy for its relaxed, peaceful attitude compared to the high-profile prestige of the Hamptons, Bellport is a cozy coastal town with beautiful homes, sunsets, and landscapes. Recent real estate growth can be attributed to the town’s commitment to maintaining a low-profile with little traffic and a simple night life.

Studio DB is a Manhattan based design firm headed by partners Damian and Britt Zunino who bring their diverse backgrounds together to offer varying perspectives and approaches to design. Our studio includes designers with varying backgrounds which allows us to have a unique vision and approach to the spaces we design.
