MONOGATARI – shou sugi ban charred cypress
Burnt on face only, sealed face & back
13/16” thick X 5-1/8” wide
Located just over 10 miles north of San Francisco, CA, Kentfield is at the base of Mount Tam and is largely made up of residential properties. The Kentfield Residence sits low underneath the heavily forested hillside, and features a dark facade created by reSAWN’s MONOGATARI shou sugi ban exterior siding. Inspired by the essence and visuals of the region’s agriculture, the exterior of the home is largely made up of natural materials like wood and stone.
Arriving at the fenced in property, the Japanese influence is immediately apparent from the low-pitched roofs, ornate garden leading to the front door, and the traditional dark shou sugi ban exterior siding. After walking under a canopy of trees on the side yard, the back yard indicates a slight change of aesthetic with a more modern design. The backyard includes two patios with rustic, wooden furniture, a small grass area, and a pool that’s set against a stone wall. A simple color pallet is accentuated by the completely black exterior of the MONOGATARI shou sugi ban exterior siding.
reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban. Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal. Historically very specific in their definition, “shousugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general. All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in their facility in Telford, PA.
