This 1970s lake home is closely situated to Lake Rotoiti and received a complete refresh, including NERO Abodo Vulcan Cladding and SiOO:X soffits. Part of this refresh included the indoor/outdoor living areas to take advantage of the breathtaking views. The wood cladding provides an overall aesthetically unified design. The architect noted, “We try to use Abodo® as much as possible…knowing the product lifecycle is pretty appealing. We keep in mind the carbon footprint of materials.”

Abodo was chosen not only due to its sustainability but for its stability as well. Being on the lakefront means exposure to all weather, and the cladding will withstand the weather with grace. This holiday home’s refresh will last for generations to come.

Weathered wood is an aesthetic that is increasingly sought after. SiOO:X provides a solution by mirroring the natural aging process and accelerating the creation of the silver-grey appearance and giving long life protection in a completely environmentally friendly way. The treated wood is initially yellowish-brown and a bit mottled. The curing and bleaching process starts on contact with water, and after 6–12 months the cladding will begin to have a lovely, even silver-grey color. The process then continues for up to 3 years.

Based in New Zealand, Abodo prides itself on producing a range of beautiful and durable timber solutions that are safe, sustainable, and renewable. The company has a strong ethos around ensuring its timber is ethically sourced and demonstrates extended producer responsibility. From milling to building, they respect their material, the people who use it, and where it comes from. For every tree milled, Abodo ensures it provides more than 30 years of service, which is as long as it takes to grow a replacement tree. Abodo also has several sustainability attributes, including:

  • Abodo modified wood products are FSC®-certified.
  • Abodo products received the Declare label from the International Living Future Institute affirming the products are Red List Free.
  •  Abodo Vulcan Cladding’s release of their Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) included that Abodo Vulcan Cladding is carbon negative.
