The Secret Garden House in Newton, MA is a serene retreat for a young family with a shared passion for sports and outdoors. The L-shaped design wraps around the pool and features ample exterior living spaces including a basketball court and elevated terraces for family and friends to gather.

Meticulously designed to navigate stringent zoning restrictions, the Secret Garden House maximizes its compact lot while fulfilling the client’s vision for a spacious home with a small footprint. Set back from the street to frame views of the gardens, the exterior is clad in NIGIRI Charred Accoya paired with granite stone walls that gradually transition visitors to the interior.

Technical Support and Highlights

An existing partnership with our Specification Consultant led the project team to partner with reSAWN for an exterior cladding that would support the home’s design and sustainability needs. After consulting on the project goals, which included a gray wood that would enhance the design’s other elements, we provided several product samples that led to the selection of NIGIRI Charred Accoya. Highlights of the solution include:

Durability and Performance: The team at Maryann Thompson Architects was in search of a high-performance wood cladding with durable, anti-rot characteristics. Engineered to withstand shifting climates, Accoya defies the elements and eliminates the vulnerabilities of natural wood through a patented modification process that improves dimensional stability.
Sustainability: A pillar of the Secret Garden House design was sustainability and environmental stewardship—preserving the mature trees that surround the home and utilizing materials and building principles to achieve a zero-carbon home. Accoya is FSC®-Certified and naturally insulating, making it ideal for applications where energy conservation is a priority. Non-toxic and recyclable, Accoya acts as a natural carbon sink, emitting lower lifecycle carbon emissions.
Mockup and Installation Support: A full-scale mockup was built onsite to evaluate the wood’s weathering capabilities and determine assembly details and proper installation practices. reSAWN’s Specification Consultant and in-house technical experts provided ongoing support throughout construction, guiding installation and ensuring the cladding performs as intended over time.

Every element of the ChaChe residence was designed with a thoughtful connection to its surroundings. In the valley of Wilson, WY, this biophilic home draws from its landscape. Gently sloping roofs rise to the mountains while its organic form follows the site’s natural contours. The ChaChe guest house sits privately across the creek; its extended eaves provide shelter and frame views of the surrounding Teton Range.

Both structures embody a seamless dialogue between architecture and environment. Natural materials and sustainable systems, including a sod roof and a ground-source heat pump that utilizes energy from the site’s existing pond, reinforces the project’s ecological design.

Technical Support and Highlights

The project goal was an efficient, biophilic home and guest house rooted in the terrain to blur the lines between built and natural landscapes. To meet these goals, reSAWN delivered KURO Charred Cypress cladding for the exterior, selected for its rich tonal variation that mimics earthy hues. Key aspects of the solution include:

Aesthetics and Functionality: KURO undergoes a meticulous charring, cooling, and finishing process that accentuates the character of the wood grain while enhancing resistance to decay. Inherently durable, cypress ensures lasting performance and graceful weathering.
Custom Profile: The design team desired shiplap for the exterior cladding. reSAWN provided a custom-milled profile that features a 3/8″ reveal and a 2-3/4″ face width for a clean, uniform installation that offers a visual contrast to the organic standstone elements of the exterior.

Rooted in the client’s deep connection to the landscape, and years spent exploring its wooded trails, Valley View is a 10,000 sq. ft. custom residence that celebrates the beauty and geological character of Ada, MI. Positioned on the highest point of the 33-acre property, the home captures sweeping views of the surrounding Grand River Watershed.

Blending contemporary design with simplicity and natural elements, Valley View draws inspiration from homes that have long been part of the region. Large stone chimney stacks, minimal ornamentation, and vertical wood cladding nod to the past while ensuring the home ages gracefully over time.

Technical Support and Highlights

To balance elegance and authenticity with longevity, the design team prioritized materials that would age beautifully with efficiency and durability. Looking for a natural material palette that would complement the site’s character, the design team partnered with reSAWN TIMBER co. to select over 13,000 sq. ft. of CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan Cladding for the exterior. Highlights of the solution include:

Material Selection: Various samples of our modified wood cladding products were sent to the project team to evaluate and test compatibility with other design elements. After narrowing the selection to nine different products, we crafted and delivered several onsite mockups where they were left out through the winter to expose the products to climate variation and observe long-term performance. The project team selected a CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan Cladding with a unique, textured surface that opens the wood grain to allow finish to deeply penetrate the wood for superior weathering and a rich color that maintains design integrity over time.
Tailored Project Coordination: We provided a custom selection of fixed-length boards in six varying sizes, ranging from 9’10” to 15’98” in length. The material shipments were sent in two separate phases to align with the construction schedule and allow the builder to secure the material in advance while efficiently managing site storage and workflows.
Technical Guidance: reSAWN’s technical team supplied comprehensive installation guidelines that included fastener recommendations and maintenance instructions to support lasting performance.

The project team is happy with the outcome, citing it as one of their proudest accomplishments. Kenowa Builders continues to partner with reSAWN, with two new projects currently in production.

Product Selection: To achieve the desired balance of sophistication and durability, reSAWN provided a wide range of product samples to identify the ideal mix of materials and finishes. Because the homeowners wanted their expansive backyard and outdoor living space to feel like a natural extension of the home, the design choice emphasized continuity between indoors and out. CUSTOM Accoya ceiling cladding was installed on the covered deck, visually bridging the exterior with the interior finish of ROCKPORT North American Black Walnut flooring and ceiling cladding. VETTE Shou Sugi Ban Kebony was also carried inside, forming a bold accent wall that further reinforces the seamless connection between spaces.
Product Customization: reSAWN produced custom-milled VETTE cladding for an interior accent wall that conceals cabinetry and a secret door to the adjoining room. This bespoke element highlights the craftsmanship and personalized solutions that elevate the residence’s character.

The Cambridge Dell house project came to reSAWN through a long-standing relationship with our Specification Consultant; a collaborative process with the project team allowed for close coordination throughout material selection and integration of several custom details. Highlights of the collaboration include:

Custom Width Optimization for Design & Yield: To meet both aesthetic preferences and material efficiency goals, reSAWN worked closely with the project team to develop an optimized solution using nominal widths of 4″, 6″, and 8″. This strategic approach provided a dynamic, varied appearance across the façade while maximizing yield and reducing product waste.
Matching Trim Elements: reSAWN fabricated several custom fascia and trim elements using NIGIRI to coordinate seamlessly with the cladding. Eight varying sizes were developed for window and door trim details while four fascia elements were created with custom drip details.
Hands-on Support: reSAWN provided a range of Accoya product samples in varying widths early in the process to help the design team visualize the final installation. This tactile step was essential in selecting the ideal combination of scale, tone, and texture. In addition to material supply, reSAWN supported the project with technical input on optimizing board sizes and trim layouts, which included consultation on achieving the best coverage and performance with minimal modification.

The result of this collaboration is a stunning one-of-a-kind home blending thoughtful design details with high-quality, durable, and sustainable materials. The project team is happy with the outcome and continues to collaborate with reSAWN for new projects.

Along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan in Holland, MI, the Grand Rapids Residence is a newly constructed cottage designed for family and friends to relax, entertain, and enjoy a connection with nature.

The new home features sleek, modern lines and large glass windows that offer a striking juxtaposition to the warm, natural-toned cladding that covers the exterior. Looking for a natural wood with an aesthetic that would harmonize the home with its serene atmosphere, and provide the durability to withstand the challenging conditions of lakeside living in Michigan, the project team selected a CUSTOM Accoya® wood by reSAWN TIMBER co.

Technical Support and Highlights

After exploring other siding materials, including fiber cement and metal designed to mimic wood, the project team found that these products appeared too commercial and lacked the warmth and authenticity of wood they were seeking. To achieve the luxury and sense of tranquility essential to the home’s natural aesthetic, high-quality wood was the clear choice. Committed to utilizing premium materials for this custom home, and having previous experience with our products, the team at Bouwkamp Builders reached out to reSAWN for assistance for choosing the ideal wood to realize their client’s vision. Highlights of the solution include:

Product Selection: Beyond the project’s clearly defined aesthetic of natural wood and warm tones, the selected material needed to perform well in the Midwest climate of hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Working closely with reSAWN’s Specification Consultant to determine the best product, a CUSTOM Accoya wood was selected. Because of its patented acetylation process, Accoya wood is highly durable and resistant to moisture and warping, ensuring it maintains stability in even the harshest weather conditions.
Samples and Mockup: Throughout the selection process, the project team received several Accoya samples to closely evaluate the texture, tones, and overall feel of the wood. Ultimately, they selected a CUSTOM color with a two-coat finish system that highly saturates the wood and ensures long-lasting color. A full-scale mockup wall was installed on-site to evaluate the expansion/contraction of the cladding and were invaluable in verifying the final selection with the homeowner.
Technical Documentation and Maintenance Support: Technical and product support documentation was provided at various stages of the project to ensure the builder and clients fully understood finish application, product weathering, and proper maintenance techniques.

Despite a winter installation, the builders were highly satisfied with the ease of installation and performance of the Accoya cladding. Now, the Grand Rapids Residence is home to a young family fulfilling their dream of living on the lake and communing with nature.

The innovative new Ryan Resilience Lab of the Elizabeth River Project in Norfolk, VA, is a globally recognized model for coastal resilience. Just off the banks of the non-profit’s namesake Elizabeth River, the site has been redeveloped with a living shoreline and an expansive new educational park and dock that welcomes the community for events and guided tours of the Lab.

Built to educate the public on climate and environmental issues, the 6,500 sq. ft. Lab serves as a visual and functional example of sustainable, green building practices, showcasing inventive yet practical ways homeowners and builders can design structures to withstand severe weather and reduce pollution.

With sustainability as the cornerstone of the project’s design, the architect came to reSAWN seeking materials that would support the goal of net-zero energy usage and serve as a replicable model for green building and construction. A CUSTOM FSC®-Certified Accoya® cladding by reSAWN TIMBER co. was used for the exterior, fulfilling the project’s sustainability needs while delivering a breezy, coastal aesthetic that grounds the building in its waterfront atmosphere.

Technical Support and Highlights:

Understanding the critical role sustainability played in the Lab’s design and mission, and the building’s role as a demonstration project, reSAWN provided targeted material recommendations that aligned with both performance and environmental goals. After supplying product samples and consulting on the performance of various wood species, a CUSTOM FSC®-Certified Accoya was selected to meet the design’s functional and ecological standards. The final specification included:

Durability: Accoya wood’s chemical modification process significantly reduces moisture absorption and retention, improving its dimensional stability and allowing it to maintain its shape in fluctuating weather. Backed by a 50-year above ground warranty, and 25 years in freshwater, it was ideally suited for the Lab’s riverside environment and utility needs.
FSC®-Certification: Sourced from sustainable, plantation grown radiata pine, Accoya is FSC®-Certified, Cradle to Cradle Gold Certified, and the only construction material in the world to achieve C2C Platinum Certification for Material Health.
Environmentally Friendly: To support the Elizabeth River Project’s mission to restore the health of its historic river, choosing an environmentally friendly material was critical. The chemical modification of Accoya is entirely non-toxic, and certified safe for animals, humans, and the environment. reSAWN developed the CUSTOM finish using a low-VOC oil to achieve the sun-washed, coastal aesthetic while maintaining environmental integrity.

The museum sits atop a former marl quarry rich with 66-million-year-old marine and terrestrial fossils from the Cretaceous period. This site has become one of the most significant fossil discoveries in the eastern United States, offering an immersive educational experience centered around earth history, extinction, and evolution. The exterior is clad in KERERū Abodo® Vulcan Cladding for a beautiful, weathered aesthetic that changes little as it ages. Manufactured using a proprietary brushing technique and 0-VOC exterior oil, KERERū evokes the soft grays of driftwood and dune grass, effortlessly blending the home with its seaside surroundings. For added contrast and dimension, NIGIRI Shou Sugi Ban Accoya® was selected and custom milled for the window and garage trim. The bold, charred finish balances the weathered exterior with depth and a modern edge.
