The museum sits atop a former marl quarry rich with 66-million-year-old marine and terrestrial fossils from the Cretaceous period. This site has become one of the most significant fossil discoveries in the eastern United States, offering an immersive educational experience centered around earth history, extinction, and evolution. The state-of-the-art facility features interactive exhibits, fossil collections, and a public quarry dig experience that fosters hands-on learning and scientific curiosity.

At the Lawrenceville School Tsai Commons and Field house, recreation, athletics, and dining come together into a single environment of connection and community. Taking a holistic approach to student wellness, the Tasi Field House is a reimagined take on the school’s historic field house that includes a two-level dining hall, state-of-the-art athletics facilities, and community event areas.

At the center of the Field House is the Harkness Courtyard, inspired by the Lawrenceville School’s culture and education model, the Harkness Method: using student-centered discussion around an oval table to encourage critical thinking and inclusive dialog. The elliptical courtyard is clad in CUSTOM FSC®-Certified Accoya® wood, a warm and organic material that transitions the experience of the landscape into the interior, establishing a sense of welcome and common space. The Osprey House on Shelter Island reflects a thoughtful coastal modernism influenced by the marshland setting and the presence of native ospreys. Influenced by bird blind structures, the home features vertical gray cladding that’s been lightly burnt using the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique for durability. The driftwood-like texture continues into the interior, where elevated living spaces and expansive windows open the home to its surroundings, creating a strong visual and spatial connection to the natural landscape.

IRUKA is crafted through a meticulous process that includes charring, misting with water, cooling, brushing, and finishing. This method enhances the wood grain and produces varying colors in different lighting. Cypress is ideal for this technique due to its consistent color, density, and hardness, while the Shou Sugi Ban charred layer elevates the cladding’s aesthetics by highlighting the wood’s natural texture and creating a tactile, three-dimensional effect.

Katherine Chia, FAIA, and Arjun Desai, AIA, are the co-founders of Desai Chia Architecture. Since launching the firm in 1996, they have built a strong reputation for crafting meaningful designs that highlight the essence of materials and purpose. Their diverse body of work spans cultural institutions, homes, commercial spaces, and product design, often created in collaboration with artists. The firm’s projects are underway both across the United States and internationally.

Jake Balston is an architectural photographer focused on design, craft and the stories surrounding.

Located in the heart of Denver’s Santa Fe Arts District, Tula is a sustainably designed apartment community that offers modern living with a focus on style and function. This thoughtfully designed development features 25 apartments with sweeping views of the city and mountains. Light toned Accoya wood clads the exterior of the apartments, offering modern aesthetic while connecting the building with its surrounding topography. Over time, the wood will naturally weather to soft gray tones, maintaining its durability and structural integrity while evolving with the environment.

Project Needs: Santulan Architecture sought a high-performing, no-maintenance exterior cladding solution for a mixed-use residential and commercial project. With their office located on the ground floor, a private residence above, and a rooftop patio, they needed a material that would age gracefully while complementing the building’s layered program and modern aesthetic.

Project Solutions: Santulan Architecture selected a CUSTOM finish for its durability and ability to support Accoya’s natural weathering process with little to no maintenance. reSAWN provided hands-on support through in-person meetings, site visits, and detailed reviews of samples and weathering documentation. When installation deviated from our original recommendations we worked directly with the design team, ensuring the material performed as intended.

Project Results: The architect is very pleased with the aesthetic and performance, noting the soft grays as the wood ages beautifully.

Perched dramatically above the Atlantic, The Cliffhanger House redefines coastal living on Eastern Long Island, NY. From the street, the 10,000-square-foot retreat appears as a discreet single story, but its waterfront facade unveils its full scale as it cascades toward the shoreline. Masterfully integrated into the natural topography, the three-tiered home was thoughtfully excavated into the bluff, maintaining a low profile that respects the coastal landscape. The exterior is wrapped in custom Charred Accoya cladding. The varied applications of wooden slats, screens, and shingles create a dynamic interplay of textures. Inside the home, ACE European White Oak flooring flows seamlessly throughout, unifying the interiors with its refined grain pattern. This carefully curated material choice strengthens the home’s cohesive design while providing a warm contrast to its striking coastal surroundings.

CUSTOM Charred Accoya® is burnt in the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban style and designed for exterior wall cladding. This charred finish adheres more effectively to modified wood than standard softwood species, which tend to flake over time. The process enhances the wood’s breathability while providing a natural, sustainable, and non-toxic alternative to chemically treated wood—offering durability without harming people or the environment.

ACE European White Oak is prefinished with matte polyurethane and available in select or character grade. Its blonde-beige tones offer versatility, complementing various interior design styles.

The Breezy Point Project is secluded along the cape of Martha’s Vineyard, offering ocean views within a serene landscape. The home’s materials are refined and cool-toned, reflecting the heritage farmhouses of the area. Alaskan Yellow Cedar clads the exterior, while Western Hemlock frames the interior ceilings, creating a thoughtful connection between the inside and out. As the landscape shifts with the seasons, these natural materials provide a timeless backdrop to their ever-changing colors.

WILLIWAW by reSAWN TIMBER co. is an Alaskan Yellow Cedar designed to provide a high-performing, natural material with a weathered aesthetic. It is available in clear vertical grain, offering a smooth and clean appearance, while each board showcases its own unique tonalities, making it one of reSAWN’s most prized materials.

SNOHOMISH Western Hemlock is a light, neutral material that brings a sense of organic warmth and comfort to any space. It is finished with a sustainable, plant-based hard wax oil that contains 0-VOC’s and is available as FSC®-Certified upon request.

Project Needs: The architects required a high-performing exterior wood cladding material with a weathered aesthetic. Having previously worked with Hutker Architects on the renowned Sunset Hill Project, reSAWN had a strong understanding of their design vision.

Project Solutions: The team received samples of products that aligned with their aesthetic and performance requirements, ultimately leading to reSAWN’s favored product, WILLIWAW Alaskan Yellow Cedar for the exterior, along with SNOHOMISH for the interior ceiling cladding. By choosing reSAWN for this project, our team was able to communicate efficiently with the architect and walk through the finish processing details.

Tucked away on nearly 8 acres in the coveted Colony at White Pine Canyon, Aspen Meadows is a dream mountain retreat in Park City, UT. Surrounded by old-growth forests, serene lakes, and cascading waterfalls, this residence invites its residents to indulge in the ultimate alpine escape. With over 8,000 sq.ft. of CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan cladding and slats, the home blends into its wooded surroundings, appearing as if it has always been part of the landscape.

Abodo® Vulcan thermally modified wood cladding is crafted from sustainably sourced New Zealand plantation timber and engineered with a patented vertical grain orientation for enhanced weather resistance. reSAWN TIMBER co.’s Abodo Fine Sawn Face Vulcan cladding features a distinctive textured surface that highlights the depth of the wood grain. This fine sawn texture opens the wood grain to allow for optimal coating performance. The thermal modification process, combined with the vertical grain structure, ensures superior stability and reduces resin content, making Vulcan cladding exceptionally durable.

Project Needs: Sparano + Mooney sought a durable, low-maintenance cladding solution that complemented the rugged landscape. Given the area’s fluctuating climate, they required a material that could withstand these conditions.

Project Solutions: Inspired by reSAWN’s weathered STRAW sample, the architect requested a custom color that achieved a similar aesthetic. The reSAWN team collaborated closely with the architect and builder to create custom color samples and a field mockup to finalize the selection. For the sleek slat walls, sections were pre-assembled on the ground using aluminum channels, with hidden screws securing the wood from behind. This approach achieved the design’s clean lines and modern aesthetic.

Project Results: The outcome of Aspen Meadows has been met with enthusiasm. The architect and client are thrilled with the cohesive design, while the builder praised the high performance and workability of Abodo wood. The project has become a standout in the area, celebrated for its attention to detail and integration with the stunning natural surroundings.
