SHOU SUGI BAN
Shou Sugi Ban CHARRED Sylva, Accoya, Kebony, Cedar, Cypress, and Reclaimed Hemlock for interior applications
reSAWN specializes in shou sugi ban charred wood for interior cladding. reSAWN’s award-winning CHARRED designs pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban aka “yakisugi” without being literal. Historically very specific in their definition, shou sugi ban and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general. All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in their facility in Telford, PA. reSAWN uses domestic wood species whenever possible, including Cypress from the Southern US, Cedar and Hemlock from the Pacific Northwest and domestic White Oak, Black Walnut & Red Oak as well as reclaimed woods from the US. Our diverse offering includes CHARRED modified wood from Kebony and Accoya, which are specifically designed for exterior applications. Our CHARRED designs have been carefully developed using modern finishes and incorporating reSAWN’s many years of experience in the architectural & design specification market. reSAWN manufacturers CHARRED wood products for a range of applications including exterior cladding, interior wall cladding & flooring, and custom furniture.
SYLVA THERMALLY MODIFIED NORTH AMERICAN RED OAK
Sylva™ features wood cladding that is sourced from abundant and sustainably grown U.S. forests. Currently, our offering consists of Thermally Modified North American Red Oak products that are locally sourced and manufactured in Pennsylvania. They are stable, weather-resistant, FSC®-Certified, and comply with Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) requirements, ensuring their longevity.
WESTERN HEMLOCK
reSAWN TIMBER co. chose Western Hemlock for interior applications due to its impeccably straight uniform grain structure, fine texture, and its creamy white to light gold color, which lends itself to a modern clean aesthetic. And, it’s a great option for an affordable, aesthetically pleasing, high grade, vertical grain material.
Many of our interior Western Hemlock clear vertical grain (CVG) designs are finished in beautiful grey tones. The palette authentically aligns with the look of exterior wood cladding that has weathered to a silver grey naturally over time, such as reSAWN’s pre-weathered clear vertical grain Western Red Cedar and Alaskan Yellow Cedar designs.
reSAWN’s Western Hemlock products include three CHARRED shou sugi ban designs — KITSAP, YAKIMA and KITTITAS — and several designs that are non-CHARRED — MASON, GRAYS HARBOR , LEWIS and SNOHOMISH. All products are available for sampling and specification.

- Strong, stable, straight-grained timber that is available in long lengths.
- Its wide and prolific availability and its ability to quickly rejuvenate makes this species very sustainable.

ACCOYA
Accoya® wood is the result of decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation to create a high performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications. By significantly enhancing the durability and dimensional stability of fast-growing and abundantly available certified wood species, Accoya® wood provides compelling environmental advantages over slow-growing hardwoods (which are often unsustainably sourced), woods treated with toxic preservative chemicals, and non-renewable carbon-intensive materials such as plastics, steel and concrete. All our CHARRED shou sugi ban Accoya® products are FSC certified and come with a 50-year warranty on the wood when used above ground; 25-year warranty when used at/below ground level.
KEBONY
Much of Kebony wood’s enhanced performance characteristics stem from the patented modification process they have adopted. Differing from other modified wood products, Kebony uses furfuryl alcohol as its modifying agent. Furfuryl alcohol is a non-toxic, bio-based fuel that impregnates the wood’s cells through a vacuum pressure treating process. When the impregnation is finished, the resulting cells are slightly changed, and that results in changes to the physical and mechanical properties of the wood byproduct. Kebony is beautiful wood recommended by leading architects. Our CHARRED shou sugi ban Kebony’s performance has been proven in a variety of applications, including decking and cladding, because of its high-quality characteristics.
WESTERN RED CEDAR
Western Red Cedar is well-known for its durability and beauty as a natural wood cladding material. It is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects and displays crisp yet superbly rich, tonal properties. CHARRED shou sugi ban western red cedar adds an extra dimension of aesthetic value to the Pacific NorthWest softwood.
CYPRESS
Cypress is notable for its color consistency, density and hardness. Although cypress is a softwood, it grows alongside hardwoods and traditionally has been grouped and manufactured with hardwoods. The oils in cypress’ heartwood make it one of the most durable woods when exposed to moisture conditions causing decay. Cypress trees are natives of the south. They are found primarily in wet, swampy areas along the Atlantic Coastal Plain from Delaware to Florida. reSAWN recommends Select Grade CHARRED shou sugi ban cypress for exterior applications.
RECLAIMED HEMLOCK
Reclaimed hemlock burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban can be used for interior wall cladding and ceiling cladding. This is reclaimed wood and will have typical reclaimed character marks including checking and knots. CHARRED reclaimed hemlock is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed and then stained/sealed. The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping. The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.
EUROPEAN WHITE OAK
reSAWN TIMBER co.’s CHARRED EUROPEAN WHITE OAK features wide plank select grade european white oak burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban that are all finished with Zero-VOC hardwax oil. Available as FSC ® upon request.
