The Hillsborough compound sits just south of San Francisco in California’s Bay Area. The home balances warmth and modernity, pairing a natural wood façade with clean architectural lines and expansive contemporary spaces.
Wood cladding extends from a kitchen ceiling feature to the exterior soffits, while the same material frames the living room fireplace and continues upward to the vaulted ceiling, reinforcing a consistent architectural language throughout the home.
The design team sought a clean, contemporary aesthetic with exterior materials capable of maintaining their intended appearance under prolonged sun exposure. Having previously specified RESAWN products, the architect selected IKIGAI and a CUSTOM wood cladding solution for the exterior façade.
As thermally modified wood products, these materials provide enhanced dimensional stability and durability while delivering the long-term performance required for California’s climate.
MASON Western Hemlock was used for the interior wall and ceiling cladding, then extended to the protected exterior soffits to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The carefully coordinated material palette reinforces the home’s architectural vision while introducing warmth and natural character throughout.
Throughout the specification process, RESAWN’s Specification Consultant worked closely with the design team to evaluate material options and refine the final selection. Multiple product samples and six mockups were provided, allowing the architect to compare finishes and determine the best solution for the project’s modern aesthetic.
RESAWN supplied exterior installation guidelines and ongoing technical support to help ensure successful execution from specification through installation.
