Set on 4.9 acres in Park City, Utah, Monitor’s Rest is a striking mountain estate designed to connect luxury living with the surrounding Wasatch Mountains. Spanning more than 19,000 square feet, the residence features an extensive collection of amenities—including a climbing wall, bowling alley, sports court, ski-in/ski-out locker room, and spa—while maintaining a cohesive architectural language through a carefully curated material palette. As noted by Interior Design Homes, “Given the house’s size, a main challenge was editing the material selection to create a focused aesthetic. Hemlock ceilings, oak floors, and walls of oak or Croatian limestone unify the disparate rooms.” Throughout the home, Western Hemlock and KURO shou sugi ban Charred Cypress create warmth, texture, and continuity across both interior and exterior spaces.
The project utilizes clear vertical grain Western Hemlock throughout the interior ceilings and select exterior soffits, creating a consistent natural material palette that extends across the residence. Chosen for its straight, uniform grain, fine texture, and light creamy color, Western Hemlock provides a clean, contemporary aesthetic while allowing the architecture and surrounding landscape to remain the focus
Select interior walls are clad in KURO, introducing texture and depth to the interior. The traditional charring process accentuates the wood’s natural grain, producing rich tonal variation that changes with shifting light while complementing the home’s warm, natural material palette.
