Overlooking Monarch Bay Beach in Dana Point, the Laguna Horizon House was renovated to strengthen its connection to the surrounding landscape and oceanfront setting. The design aimed to create a seamless balance between natural wood elements and more contemporary materials.
PONZU charred cypress was selected for its Shou Sugi Ban finish, aligning with the project’s emphasis on a refined, charred aesthetic. The combination of deep, textured charring and PONZU’s natural tonal variation with a brushed surface enhances the material’s organic character. The same material continues inside, where ceiling cladding in the entryway and kitchen creates a sense of continuity throughout the space.
A durable material for the exterior façade and garage door was required to perform across a range of climate conditions. Charred cypress was selected for its ability to withstand high UV exposure, humidity, and moisture. In Laguna Beach’s coastal climate, the species’ natural cypressene oils act as a built-in preservative, offering long-term performance with minimal maintenance.
This level of functionality made it a reliable choice for meeting both environmental and durability requirements. The specification consultants’ close collaboration with the specifier ensured a smooth decision-making process and alignment with the project’s design goals.
