Along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan in Holland, MI, the Grand Rapids Residence is a newly constructed cottage designed for family and friends to relax, entertain, and enjoy a connection with nature. The new home features sleek, modern lines and large glass windows that offer a striking juxtaposition to the warm, natural-toned cladding that covers the exterior.
Seeking the warmth and authenticity of real wood, the project team selected CUSTOM acetylated modified wood by RESAWN after determining that alternative materials, including fiber cement and wood-look metal siding, could not achieve the desired architectural character.
Working closely with RESAWN’s specification consultant, the team chose a custom modified solution capable of withstanding Michigan’s demanding climate of hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Thanks to its patented acetylation process, Accoya® offers exceptional dimensional stability, moisture resistance, and long-term durability, making it ideally suited for lakeside applications.
Throughout the selection process, multiple product samples were evaluated before the team selected a custom two-coat finish that deeply saturates the wood, providing rich color and long-lasting performance.
To validate the final specification, a full-scale mockup wall was constructed on site, allowing the project team and homeowner to evaluate the appearance of the finish as well as the anticipated movement of the cladding prior to installation.
Throughout design and construction, RESAWN provided technical documentation, installation guidance, and maintenance recommendations to support the successful execution and long-term performance of the exterior wood cladding. Despite being installed during the winter months, the builders praised the ease of installation and overall performance.
