A visionary new development that blends surf culture, entertainment, and community at the heart of Virginia Beach, VA, Atlantic Park spans four city blocks and features state-of-the-art amenities including music and entertainment venues, restaurants, retail stores, residences, and office spaces. Backed by Virginia Beach native musician Pharrell Williams, the complex is anchored by a 2.67 acre surf lagoon that replicates natural waves and creates an authentic ocean-like experience, celebrating the birthplace of East Coast surfing.
At the entrance to the surf park, a key architectural structure is taking shape; clad in over 21,000 sq. ft. of Accoya® wood by reSAWN TIMBER co., the Atlantic Park Surf building includes retail space, a lifeguard station, and the main arrival point for surfers, making its aesthetic and material choices especially impactful in setting the tone for guests. Chemically modified to improve durability and reduce water retention, Accoya wood was the ideal choice for the exterior of this surf-side structure.
Technical Support and Highlights:
reSAWN TIMBER co. was introduced to the design team through a virtual CEU session delivered by our Specification Consultant to the project’s lead architect. This sparked a highly collaborative process with all architects involved – Cooper Carry, Hanbury, and Gensler – to identify materials that aligned with both the design vision and performance requirements.
The development team and property owner were already familiar with reSAWN at the start of the project build, having previously explored our award-winning Shou Sugi Ban products. Working closely with our Specification Consultant to determine the ideal wood species and finish for the location, they selected Accoya wood in three different finishes, chosen for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and suitability for the coastal environment. Other aspects of our solution included:
- Samples & Mockups: reSAWN provided several different product samples were on aesthetic and performance criteria, including custom samples tailored to the unique project. After reviewing a wide range of species and finishes, the team selected Accoya®. To validate performance and appearance, three full-scale mockups were installed onsite. The clients were highly satisfied with the mockup performance, and the project moved confidently into the construction phase.
- Installation Support: Technical support began early in the construction timeline, with our team providing guidance on cladding profiles and installation best practices. Given the building’s curved structure, we determined that a shiplap profile would be ideal for the cladding to allow for movement while maintaining a clean, consistent appearance. Detailed documentation was shared to ensure proper reveals, spacing, and fastening practices, including recommendations on screw types and rain screen systems. Close coordination between our technical team, Specification Consultant, and the builders helped ensure smooth execution throughout installation.
- Project Management Services: To keep the project on schedule and on budget, reSAWN’s Project Manager worked closely with our production team, and the project construction team, to plan efficient deliveries and meet key construction milestones. Materials were delivered in several phases to maintain lead times and avoid delays, ensuring installation stayed on track.
The property owner, developer, and project architects are happy with the product and its ability to bring their vision to life, also noting that Accoya’s FSC®-Certification was a bonus in contributing to the building’s sustainability and environmental friendliness.
