Built into the rolling hills of Caledon, Ontario, the Coolihans Residence is coming together against a backdrop of mature trees and woodlands. This custom-built home blends timeless design with modern luxuries for a one-of-a-kind residence that’s perfectly at home in its surroundings.

Thoughtfully designed around the site’s natural topography for functionality and low maintenance, this elevated cottage features custom-fabricated glass railings and large windows that maximize the surrounding landscape of endless nature views. The exterior is clad in a CUSTOM charred Western Red Cedar, with a select tight knot grade that allows for the presence of natural character and knots for a beautiful rustic, yet elevated finish.

Technical Support and Highlights:

The design for this project was highly intentional, embracing a modern cottage aesthetic with exposed timber details throughout. The project team was in search of a wood cladding solution that could support the architectural vision while remaining low maintenance over time. Highlights of the solution include:

• Material Selection: During the design phase, reSAWN provided the project team with a broad range of Shou Sugi Ban samples for their client to review. We recommended a charred product, as the outer carbon layer created during the charring process forms a natural barrier against moisture and UV exposure, making it an excellent choice for homes in more rural areas. The charring process further enhances the wood’s resistance to weathering, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. After discussing various options, budget, and client expectations, a 1×8 CUSTOM charred Western Red Cedar was the ideal fit for this project.
• Installation Support: Throughout the design and material selection process, reSAWN’s Specification Consultant and technical team provided installation support and documentation to ensure the product was installed to the right specifications. To determine the weathering properties and test installation methods, a full-size mockup was installed onsite.
