In the rugged landscape of the Valley of Parowan, Utah, the Ryan Residence is currently under construction as a contemporary home designed to prioritize accessibility, comfort, and long-term livability without compromising architectural character. Thoughtfully integrated into its surroundings, the residence embraces the natural beauty of Southern Utah through a restrained material palette and clean, modern forms that complement the expansive desert landscape.
When complete, the home will offer a durable, low-maintenance exterior designed to weather gracefully while remaining responsive to the region’s demanding climate.
The exterior is clad in CUSTOM FSC®-Certified Sylva™, a thermally modified North American Red Oak selected for its warm natural appearance, exceptional durability, and sustainable sourcing. The material was chosen to complement the surrounding geography while providing long-term performance in Utah’s high-desert environment.
Thermally modified for enhanced dimensional stability and resistance to decay, Sylva offers the beauty of American hardwood with the durability required for exterior applications. Sourced from FSC®-Certified North American forests, CUSTOM supports responsible forestry while providing a low-maintenance façade designed to weather naturally over time. Its WUI certification also makes it an ideal specification for projects located within Wildland-Urban Interface zones, offering an added level of confidence for both architects and homeowners.
Throughout the specification process, RESAWN worked with the architect by providing product samples that allowed the design team to evaluate color, texture, and overall material character in the context of the project. The samples provided the clarity and confidence needed to finalize the specification without the need for a field mockup.
The architect collaborated directly with the builder to advance the project, selecting a CUSTOM finish that aligned with the home’s natural aesthetic. From product selection through material procurement and installation, the process progressed smoothly through close coordination between the project team.
Construction is progressing steadily, with exterior cladding installation underway as the residence moves toward completion.
