Construction is underway for the Governors Drive Project on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, where the home’s contemporary architecture responds to the island’s coastal landscape and subtropical climate. Known for its pristine beaches and strong commitment to environmental conservation, Kiawah demands exterior materials capable of performing in a challenging marine environment. The residence features approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of CUSTOM FSC®-Certified furfurylated modified wood exterior cladding, bringing a bold, refined character to the home’s exterior.
The project features CUSTOM modified wood selected for its deep black aesthetic, long-term durability, and low-maintenance performance. Combining Kebony’s® modified wood technology with RESAWN’s charred finish, the product delivers a distinctive architectural appearance while providing excellent dimensional stability and weather resistance. Backed by Kebony’s 50-year warranty, the material is well suited for demanding coastal environments and requires no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
The project team sought a resilient exterior material that could withstand the harsh coastal environment while achieving a rich black finish without requiring on-site finishing. The CUSTOM product was selected over traditional painted cedar for its proven durability, factory-prefinished quality, and long-term performance, allowing the project to achieve its desired aesthetic with a streamlined installation process.
