The Sand Prairie House, located in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, sits within a quiet, landscape-driven setting shaped by the natural character of the region. Designed by The Kubala Washatko Architects, this 10,100-square-foot modern home draws inspiration from the organic structure of sand dune formations, creating a strong connection between architecture and place. Surrounded by wooded terrain and an open rural landscape, the project’s material palette feels grounded in its environment while supporting the architect’s desired design expression.
Early coordination helped support a confident material selection for the Wisconsin climate. RESAWN provided project-specific mockups, submittals, and exterior installation guidelines, allowing the design team to evaluate the materials before final installation. The mockups gave the team a physical reference for finish, texture, profile, and overall appearance, helping them understand how the charred and non-charred products would work together across the façade. This step also created an opportunity to review detailing and performance considerations early in the process, ensuring the selected materials supported both the visual goals and long-term expectations of the build.
The final specification brought together acetylated modified wood as both charred and non-charred wood cladding, balancing natural wood beauty with durability, stability, and thoughtful execution. After reviewing mockups of modified materials, the distinctive textured surface of charred wood and the natural browns of non-charred woods became an expected result throughout all frames of the façade. Sand Prairie House reflects a careful approach to design intent and the materials’ environmental performance.
