Shelter Island, NY, is a charming island located between the North and South Forks of Long Island, known for its natural beauty, serene beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. The island’s architecture reflects a blend of traditional New England styles and modern designs, often incorporating elements such as natural materials, large porches, and large-pane windows to take advantage of the stunning waterfront views. The textured surface of the charred Cypress wood adds depth and character, providing an eye-catching element that echoes the island’s maritime heritage.

IRUKA is crafted through a meticulous process that includes charring, misting with water, cooling, brushing, and finishing. This method enhances the wood grain and produces varying colors in different lighting. Cypress is ideal for this technique due to its consistent color, density, and hardness, while the Shou Sugi Ban charred layer elevates the cladding’s aesthetics by highlighting the wood’s natural texture and creating a tactile, three-dimensional effect.

Projects Needs: The architect and client were seeking a high-quality, natural wood siding with a uniform yet textured appearance. They specifically looked for pre-finished, gray-toned siding that would age well and maintain a natural wood aesthetic. Having previously used reSAWN’s products at the Dune House, they were drawn to the look and performance of the charred Cypress siding for Shelter Island House.

Project Solutions: The architect specified IRUKA charred Cypress after sampling several gray-toned options, favoring its uniform, textured look that aligned with the client’s aesthetic. Though no field mockup was conducted, the architect and builder—already familiar with our materials and process—were confident in the choice.

Project Results: The architect and builder’s return to reSAWN underscores their strong satisfaction with our materials and service. Our IRUKA charred Cypress product delivered precisely the natural aesthetic and durability the client envisioned.
