Project Overview
Shelter Island, NY, is a charming island located between the North and South Forks of Long Island, known for its natural beauty, serene beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. The island’s architecture reflects a blend of traditional New England styles and modern designs, often incorporating elements such as natural materials, large porches, and large-pane windows to take advantage of the stunning waterfront views. The textured surface of the charred Cypress wood adds depth and character, providing an eye-catching element that echoes the island’s maritime heritage.
Material Selection & Performance
The exterior is clad in IRUKA shou sugi ban Cypress, selected for its uniform gray tones, richly textured surface, and long-term durability. Produced through a traditional charring process that includes burning, cooling, brushing, and finishing, IRUKA enhances the natural grain of the cypress while creating a dynamic surface that changes with shifting light.
Naturally durable cypress is particularly well suited for the shou sugi ban process due to its consistent color, density, and stability. The resulting charred finish not only highlights the wood’s natural character but also provides a weather-resistant exterior designed to perform in demanding coastal environments.
Having previously specified RESAWN products on the Dune House, the project team selected IRUKA after evaluating several gray-toned wood options, ultimately choosing it for its distinctive texture, refined appearance, and proven performance.
Specification & Technical Support
Building on a successful working relationship, the architect and builder collaborated with RESAWN throughout the material selection process to identify the ideal finish for the project. Product samples allowed the team to confidently evaluate color, texture, and overall appearance before finalizing the specification.
Drawing on their previous experience with RESAWN’s products and installation methods, the team was able to proceed with confidence, achieving the desired architectural expression while benefiting from a familiar and proven material solution.
