Tongue & Groove (T&G)
Set on more than two acres overlooking the Massachusetts coastline near Martha’s Vineyard, this private residence was designed to celebrate the site’s extraordinary natural beauty rather than compete with it. Framed by sweeping 270-degree views of the ocean, rolling hills, and surrounding woodland, the architecture is composed of a primary residence and detached guest quarters arranged as sculptural volumes that create a series of interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces.
The restrained architectural palette allows the landscape to remain the focal point while carefully detailed wood elements unify the entire property.
The project incorporates a comprehensive package of NIGIRI and CUSTOM shou sugi ban acetylated modified wood across multiple exterior applications, including cladding, window jambs and trim, fencing, decking, rakes, and fascia. Utilizing the same high-performance material throughout the exterior creates a cohesive architectural language while ensuring consistent weathering, finish quality, and long-term performance.
Crafted using the traditional shou sugi ban technique and engineered from Accoya® wood, the material combines the rich texture and character of charred timber with exceptional dimensional stability and durability. The dense charred surface enhances resistance to moisture, decay, and weathering, while Accoya’s patented acetylation process minimizes movement and delivers industry-leading longevity. FSC®-certified and backed by a 50-year above-ground warranty, the material provides a durable, low-maintenance solution ideally suited for the demanding coastal environment.
To support the home’s highly detailed architecture, RESAWN supplied a coordinated exterior wood package spanning multiple custom applications. Sourcing the cladding, trim, decking, fencing, and architectural details from a single supplier simplified coordination while ensuring consistent craftsmanship, finish quality, and material performance across the entire property.
