Located on twenty-nine acres of oceanfront property on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, the Martha’s Vineyard Residence is currently under construction as a multi-building coastal retreat. The project includes a 2,200-square-foot residence, a spa with an indoor lap pool, a studio, a carport, and a greenhouse, all thoughtfully positioned within the landscape.
Designed to meet Passive House “Low Energy Building” standards, the project emphasizes durable, low-maintenance materials that support long-term performance while responding to the challenges of a coastal environment.
The project incorporates more than 28,000 square feet of PACKARD 2.0 shou sugi ban Western Red Cedar, selected for its durability, natural resistance to decay, and distinctive charred appearance. The exterior cladding is intended to provide a refined black façade while standing up to the harsh coastal climate.
PACKARD 2.0 is produced through a process of charring, misting, cooling, brushing, and finishing that enhances the cedar’s natural grain and creates subtle tonal variation that changes with light and viewing angle. The result is a durable exterior material that aligns with the project’s architectural and sustainability goals.
The design team sought a high-performance, low-maintenance black wood cladding capable of meeting the demands of a coastal environment. RESAWN worked closely with the architects throughout the specification process, providing guidance on the benefits of shou sugi ban along with custom samples, profile drawings, and submittals.
To meet the project’s design requirements, RESAWN developed custom dimensions and fixed-length material, coordinating production to satisfy the large volume required while maintaining the project’s quality and scheduling objectives.
Construction is actively progressing, with material deliveries supporting the phased installation of the custom charred Western Red Cedar cladding across the property’s multiple structures.
