Project Overview
Overlooking the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay, this waterfront residence occupies more than eight acres of pristine coastal landscape, with uninterrupted views of barrier islands and sandy beaches. Designed as a home that evolves with the rhythms of the day, the architecture is organized into four distinct pavilions dedicated to living, sleeping, recreation, and support spaces. These volumes are connected by a luminous circulation spine that reinforces movement through the home while framing changing perspectives of the surrounding landscape.
The restrained architecture balances traditional forms with a contemporary sensibility, using natural materials to create a calm, Zen-inspired retreat that seamlessly integrates with its waterfront setting.
Material Selection & Performance
The exterior incorporates NIGIRI shou sugi ban acetylated modified wood and MONOGATARI 2.0 shou sugi ban Cypress, utilizing two complementary charred wood systems to create depth, texture, and visual contrast throughout the façade.
NIGIRI combines the timeless character of the traditional Shou Sugi Ban process with the exceptional performance of acetylated wood. Its outstanding dimensional stability, durability, and resistance to moisture make it particularly well suited for demanding coastal environments.
MONOGATARI 2.0 introduces additional warmth and texture through its expressive grain and subtle tonal variation. Naturally rich in preservative cypressene oils, cypress offers inherent resistance to insects, rot, and decay. Combined with RESAWN’s proprietary charring process, it provides a durable, low-maintenance exterior finish designed to withstand heat, humidity, and coastal weather while developing greater character over time.
Specification & Technical Support
The project required exterior materials capable of balancing refined aesthetics with long-term performance in an exposed waterfront environment. RESAWN supplied a coordinated package of charred Accoya® and charred Cypress, allowing the design team to utilize each material where its unique visual and performance characteristics best supported the architectural vision while maintaining a cohesive exterior expression.
