The Martha’s Vineyard Residence is underway along the coast of Massachusetts. Situated on twenty-nine acres of oceanfront property, the complex includes a 2,200 sq. ft. house, a spa with an indoor lap pool, a studio, a carport, and a greenhouse for heirloom roses. The design incorporates sustainable materials such as over 28,000 sq. ft. of Shou Sugi Ban charred Western Red Cedar, all while adhering to Passive House “Low Energy Building” standards.
Western Red Cedar is known for its natural resistance to decay, making it a durable and sustainable choice for both interior and exterior applications. PACKARD 2.0 is created through a meticulous process of charring, misting with water, cooling, brushing, and finishing, which enhances the wood grain and creates varying colors that shift with different angles and light.
Project Needs: The architect sought the highest-performing, low-maintenance black wood siding option for a project in the harsh coastal climate of Martha’s Vineyard. Their interest in Shou Sugi Ban led them to reSAWN, where they were educated on the advantages of the charring process. The variety of options and expertise we provided made us a trusted partner for this project.
Project Solutions: PACKARD 2.0 charred Western Red Cedar was selected as the ideal material to bring the architect’s vision to life. The project had a specific design requirement for custom dimensions in fixed lengths, alongside a need for a large volume of material. Our commitment to quality resolved concerns about sourcing and meeting the premium specifications. Custom submittals and profile drawings were provided to set clear expectations, ensuring that the material met the architect’s stringent requirements.
Project Results: The project team is thrilled with the material’s performance and installation. We delivered the material ahead of schedule and within budget, fulfilling the fixed-length specification. The architect’s satisfaction has led to an interest in specifying our products for another building on the same site.
