ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Hive Oakland blends new and old to handcraft a style of its own. The brick and timber buildings have a timeless appeal while modern updates and fully sustainable building practices bring the style into aesthetic and ecological balance.  Comprised of seven retail storefronts, eight multi-use office spaces, 8 converted lofts and 96 new walk-up apartments, this mixed-use development is a platform for enhancing local culture and strengthening the community.

An industry leader for more than 80 years, Balfour Beatty Construction Services US provides general contracting, at-risk construction management, design-build services, and public-private partnership expertise for a wide variety of markets. With more than 3,000 employees across the U.S., the company has been cited as a Top 10 Domestic Building Contractor and Top 10 Green Builder by Engineering News-Record. The company is part of London-based Balfour Beatty plc, a global infrastructure services business operating in more than 80 countries, with a worldwide commitment to providing assets that help societies function, develop, and thrive.

Balfour Beatty’s space in The Hive features reSAWN’s shou sugi ban charred cypress wall cladding in #2 common grade.

reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban.  Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal.  Historically very specific in their definition, “shou-sugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general.  All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in our facility in Telford, PA.
