Located between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains in Carpinteria, California, the Pacific Point House is currently undergoing a complete renovation, transforming the original 1960s residence into a custom modern home. The redesign embraces natural light, outdoor living, and expansive coastal views while strengthening the home’s connection to its surrounding landscape.
Designed for long-term performance in a coastal environment, the project combines natural wood materials with modern detailing to create an exterior that will evolve gracefully over time.
The exterior features SiOO:X thermally modified radiata pine wood cladding, selected for its ability to weather naturally into a soft, uniform silver-gray patina. The mineral-based SiOO:X treatment allows the wood to transition from its initial warm yellow-brown tone into a weathered finish over time, creating an exterior that blends with the coastal setting.
Accent areas are clad in SAMITTO charred acetylated modified wood, including a horizontal feature wall at the front of the home. The textured charred finish provides visual contrast while offering exceptional dimensional stability and durability, making it well suited for the demands of an oceanfront climate.
The project team sought wood materials that combined refined aesthetics with proven performance in coastal conditions. SiOO:X was selected for its natural weathering characteristics.
RESAWN supported the specification process by providing product samples and field mockups, allowing the design team to evaluate both appearance and weathering performance before construction advanced. Following the successful mockups, the project team expanded the specification to incorporate additional RESAWN materials across the home’s exterior.
Construction is underway as the residence continues its transformation into a contemporary coastal home, with exterior cladding installation progressing as the renovation moves toward completion.
