House on Sag Harbor – Long Island, NY
The House on Sag Harbor exemplifies refined minimalism and profound connection to its site. The design is composed of two rectangular forms set perpendicular to one another; the longer form runs parallel to the beach, offering expansive waterfront views through a 40-foot wall of glass. Designed by 1100 Architect in collaboration with homeowner Kelly Klein, its deliberate and sophisticated, organically blending architecture and landscape.
The project team sought a highly customized exterior solution to achieve the desired level of visual restraint. Stripped down to only fundamental elements, the façade eliminates visible window frames and gutters, making a high-performing, modified wood cladding essential for a seamless transition to roof cladding. Material priorities included minimal maintenance and predictable, uniform weathering to a clean, subtle grey.
During the design phase, the project team visited our facility to review samples and observe our exterior weathering rigs. We provided precedents and installation guidance from comparable roof-clad projects in the region, including Six Square House and Twin Gables, to validate constructibility and prepare the team for the project’s unique application.
The final specification included a full custom SiOO:X cladding solution, selected for its textured grain and accelerated weathering characteristics that complements the home’s minimalist expression. An organic preservative treatment was added to further enhance durability and rot resistance. An onsite mockup was built to evaluate weathering behavior and refine installation techniques prior to full application.
A striking material contrast is introduced through a sliding barn door of VETTE Shou Sugi Ban cladding. The deep, charred finish is a rich tonal counterpoint to the patina of SiOO:X while visually tying the new residence to the site’s nearby renovated cabin, intentionally painted black to echo the same understated character.
To support the project through construction, we milled an S3S profile to custom dimensions, provided ongoing technical support for the roof and wall assemblies, and conducted site visits to review detailing and installation methods. The result is a flawlessly executed exterior envelope that performs as intended and achieves the effortless elegance reflective of the homeowners vision.
