Along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan in Holland, MI, the Grand Rapids Residence is a newly constructed cottage designed for family and friends to relax, entertain, and enjoy a connection with nature.
The new home features sleek, modern lines and large glass windows that offer a striking juxtaposition to the warm, natural-toned cladding that covers the exterior. Looking for a natural wood with an aesthetic that would harmonize the home with its serene atmosphere, and provide the durability to withstand the challenging conditions of lakeside living in Michigan, the project team selected a CUSTOM Accoya® wood by reSAWN TIMBER co.
Technical Support and Highlights
After exploring other siding materials, including fiber cement and metal designed to mimic wood, the project team found that these products appeared too commercial and lacked the warmth and authenticity of wood they were seeking. To achieve the luxury and sense of tranquility essential to the home’s natural aesthetic, high-quality wood was the clear choice. Committed to utilizing premium materials for this custom home, and having previous experience with our products, the team at Bouwkamp Builders reached out to reSAWN for assistance for choosing the ideal wood to realize their client’s vision. Highlights of the solution include:
- Product Selection: Beyond the project’s clearly defined aesthetic of natural wood and warm tones, the selected material needed to perform well in the Midwest climate of hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Working closely with reSAWN’s Specification Consultant to determine the best product, a CUSTOM Accoya wood was selected. Because of its patented acetylation process, Accoya wood is highly durable and resistant to moisture and warping, ensuring it maintains stability in even the harshest weather conditions.
- Samples and Mockup: Throughout the selection process, the project team received several Accoya samples to closely evaluate the texture, tones, and overall feel of the wood. Ultimately, they selected a CUSTOM color with a two-coat finish system that highly saturates the wood and ensures long-lasting color. A full-scale mockup wall was installed on-site to evaluate the expansion/contraction of the cladding and were invaluable in verifying the final selection with the homeowner.
- Technical Documentation and Maintenance Support: Technical and product support documentation was provided at various stages of the project to ensure the builder and clients fully understood finish application, product weathering, and proper maintenance techniques.
Despite a winter installation, the builders were highly satisfied with the ease of installation and performance of the Accoya cladding. Now, the Grand Rapids Residence is home to a young family fulfilling their dream of living on the lake and communing with nature.
