The “lanes” in Amagansett, New York, are a set of walkable streets perpendicular to Main Street, dotted with a diverse range of houses and styles, that are walking distance to the ocean.
One of MB Architecture’s challenges was creating a home that would accommodate the owners wish for a maintenance-free house with longevity, inside and outside. This led to building shapes and materials that would be hardy, devoid of delicate detailing, and requiring no re-finishing over time. All exterior materials, from reSAWN’s custom shou sugi ban charred cypress, to raw concrete walls, to the zinc roof were chosen for their ability to weather and patina naturally over time. On the exterior of the house, the concrete gives way to a the shou sugi ban charred cypress, starting a play between these two materials that extends throughout the house — contrasting spaces of recluse (wood) with foundational anchoring walls (concrete).
MB Architecture chose to carry reSAWN’s custom shou sugi ban charred cypress throughout the interior of the home. They also incorporated reSAWN’s GOVERNOR European white oak flooring and custom North American white oak ceiling cladding.
reSAWN’s shou sugi ban charred cypress is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed and then stained/sealed. The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the back side as well as the face). The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.
reSAWN’s shou sugi ban charred cypress products are made with cypress sourced from the Southern United States and can be used for interior wall cladding, ceiling cladding and exterior siding. With its legendary beauty and natural durability, cypress has long been a staple as an exterior wood siding product. Because cypress generates its own preservative oil, called cypressene, it’s an ideal wood for locations with constant heat, humidity, and torrential rains.
Our charring & sealing process makes for beautifully designed exterior wood siding. Like any exterior wood siding prefinished or finished in place, these materials will weather naturally over time and will require maintenance. For interior applications, expect little to no change.
reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban. Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal. Historically very specific in their definition, “shou-sugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general. All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in our facility in Telford, PA.
GOVERNOR features wide plank European White Oak flooring and wall cladding prefinished with hardwax oil.
reSAWN’s European White Oak is prefinished and available in engineered construction. The engineered material comes standard at 5/8” thick with a substantial 4 mm wear layer, or 3/4” thick with a full 6 mm wear layer for a truly superior product. The 7” face width showcases the full character and grain pattern that European White Oak has to offer.
reSAWN’s North American White Oak products feature wide plank wood flooring, wall cladding, and millwork/stairs that are CHARRED or prefinished and available in solid & engineered construction. The North American White Oak products are made using domestic woods such as Rift & Quarter Sawn White Oak. These designs emphasize the natural color & beauty of these woods.
