The Northwest Residence pairs a modern architectural profile with a material palette chosen for longevity, consistency, and visual calm. Seeking a weathered wood that would hold its color and character across shifting exposures, the design-build team reached out to reSAWN knowing the material would be beautiful, predictable, and thoughtfully supported.
Hand samples of our pre-weathered products helped narrow the vision for selecting the right material. A full-scale mockup was installed onsite and left to weather for over a year, revealing how the selected material would age in place. The long exposure confirmed the choice of WILLIWAW Alaskan Yellow Cedar for the exterior cladding and soffits for its soft, pre-weathered tones and quiet modernity. A juxtaposing accent of CUSTOM Charred Accoya added a dramatic edge that complements the otherwise gentle exterior.
To carry the same character inward, we used a strategic pairing of MASON Western Hemlock for the interior ceiling cladding. MASON’s vertical grain structure and understated finish allowed the ceilings to echo the soffits without relying on exterior-grade material, preserving both budget and design intent. Together, MASON and WILLIWAW create a seamless progression of color and grain, giving the home a calm, continuous rhythm.
During installation, reSAWN met the team onsite to review the materials and offer guidance on weathering and installation, so the result maintained the visual clarity and consistency the design depended on. The finished residence is a warm, restrained expression of natural materials used with intention.
