The Alfond Coastal Research Center at the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, MA, offers experiential learning by providing students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and real-world projects immersed in nature. The state-of-the-art facility, spanning 6,800 sq.ft., will incorporate an aquatic laboratory supplied with water sourced from the Parker River. This project will feature over 4,200 sq. ft. of reSAWN TIMBER co.’s SAMITTO charred Accoya® exterior cladding.
Project Needs: The building is an aquatic studies center on the campus of a prep school in Massachusetts, about 45 minutes north of Boston on a salt river. The clients are looking for something that can seamlessly blend the school building with its surrounding natural environment and offer an environment for students to do hands-on collaborative marine research in a lab environment.
Project Solutions: The clients decided that reSAWN TIMBER co.’s SAMITTO charred Accoya® was the optimal choice for the project’s open joint installation. They selected Accoya for its outstanding performance and durability. It’s especially well-suited for a climate with substantial weather variations and close proximity to saltwater.
Project Results: To seamlessly blend with its surrounding natural environment, the project called for durable wood siding, capable of both horizontal and vertical installation. This will deliver what the clients desire and will provide an exceptional learning experience for the students once it opens.
SAMITTO by reSAWN TIMBER co. features charred Accoya® wood burnt with the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. SAMITTO can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. Accoya® wood is the outcome of decades of research and development, combining a well-established and extensively proven wood modification technique with leading-edge patented technology – acetylation, delivering a high-performance wood solution for outdoor use and in challenging applications.
