In the southern part of the Canadian provence of Alberta, this private residence in Calgary used reSAWN’s TORA shou sugi ban charred cypress exterior siding. The design is largely cubic with various squares and rectangles jutting out from the primary building structure. TORA maintains a natural color tone with varying depths of revealed wood grain.

The brown of the TORA shou sugi ban siding is a natural accent to the other colors of black and white. Off to one side of the residence, TORA surrounds individual rooms that appear to float off of the side of the structure. Away from the main building and overlooking the yard, the rooms give an intriguing aesthetic from the outside, and provide a more developed view from the inside.

CHARRED using the ancient Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, TORA has a layer of protection from water, insect, and rot. The burning of the wood carbonizes the exterior layer, which causes the cells to resist the moisture absorption process. TORA is fully charred, brushed, and finished to accentuate the natural wood grain. With its legendary beauty and natural durability, cypress has long been a staple as an exterior wood siding product.  Because cypress generates its own preservative oil, called cypressene, it’s an ideal wood for locations with constant heat, humidity, and torrential rains.

Most people know Calgary as the centre of Canada’s energy industry, as the closest metropolitan centre to the Rocky Mountains and as the home of the world-renowned Calgary Stampede. Calgary is definitely all of those things, but it’s also so much more. Click here to learn more Calgary Tourism.
