Located in Ballwin, MO, is an equestrian farm spanning over 10 acres. Hidden Arches was designed to match the surrounding Missouri farmland, fitting perfectly in the long lines of the property. When entering the property, you cross over a small bridge with a water feature that filters excessive runoff water, protecting the natural stream bordering the south side of the property. The overall project features a beautiful balance with a mixture of locally sourced wood and stone, accentuated with steel accents.

Hidden Arches is believed to be the most energy-efficient equestrian complex in the United States. The private farm incorporates state-of-the-art energy systems throughout the complex of buildings, including a geothermal heat pump system, solar panels, and sustainable real wood cladding.

TAIYO was chosen due to the wood protection added from the charring shou sugi ban process and its sustainability. Charring adds an extra layer of protection to wood’s structural durability. In addition, the burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in a different light. In time, the siding will age gracefully, turning grey.

TAIYO by reSAWN TIMBER co. features Charred Cypress burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban and is available for interior or exterior wall cladding.

Blackburn Architects, founded by John Blackburn in 1983, is focused on a very special market: Equestrian Architecture. Using principles of natural ventilation, they create buildings that “breathe” with air and with light, dissipating heat and moisture. An architect with an engineer’s fascination for science and its influence on design, John Blackburn refers to vertical ventilation as the firm’s most important consideration.
