Located on a rocky plateau in Santa Rosa Mountains, CA, this magnificent residence aptly named High Desert Retreat features reSAWN’s YOSHIMI shou sugi ban charred FSC®-Certified Accoya® interior and exterior cladding. This retreat offers captivating views of the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains. The color palette of the home contrasts with the surrounding desert landscape’s lighter palette.

The home features crisp geometry that does not interfere but enhances the surrounding landscape. The exterior is clad with burnt and wire brushed wood cladding – YOSHIMI – to provide a highly textured finish. The benefits of Accoya wood, such as insect and rot resistance, are an excellent match for the area, including the climate’s nuances such as significant temperature changes. The interior of the home features a mix of concrete, wood cladding, stone, and steel.

Accoya is wood, but not as you know it. It is a modified timber in which a process called acetylation, a cutting-edge patented technology, enables it to resist rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades. Guaranteed for 50 years above ground and 25 years in-ground or freshwater, its performance and properties are remarkable.

Shou sugi ban Accoya is the combination of high-performance modified wood and an award-winning charred technique. Inspired by an ancient Japanese process that dates back to the 1700s, shou sugi ban enhances the exterior performance and aesthetic value of natural wood products. Due to the enhanced durability of Accoya, a dense outer char layer allows the wood to transition to a beautiful weathered look seamlessly. All of our charred shou sugi ban Accoya products are FSC® certified.
