Nestled against Bald Mountain in Ketchum, ID, the River Ranch Residence is situated on a picturesque 5-acre parcel, beautifully framed by a surrounding river. Clad in light-toned Accoya® and charred Cypress, the home’s exterior echoes the natural palette of the surrounding forest. This thoughtful material selection fosters a strong connection between the residence and its environment. Built to endure Ketchum’s dramatic climate fluctuations, the inherent qualities of Accoya® and charred Cypress mirror the enduring strength and integrity of the mountainous landscape. This harmonious blend of design and environment fosters a deep sense of permanence and connection to the natural world.
Cypress is notable for its consistent color, density, and hardness, making it an ideal building material for challenging climate conditions. Enhanced with a Shou Sugi Ban charred layer, it elevates cladding aesthetics by highlighting the natural texture of wood and creating a tactile, three-dimensional visual effect. Combined with Accoya® wood, the home promises to age gracefully alongside the untouched landscape for decades to come.
Project Needs: The primary focus for the exterior cladding selection at this mountain residence was long-term performance. Located in a region known for significant climate fluctuations, the project demanded a material that could withstand these variations with minimal maintenance and consistent weathering characteristics.
Project Solutions: Inspired by the use of Cypress cladding on the nearby Hardrock Project, Jennifer Hoey desired light toned timber for this home’s design. After reviewing product information with a specification consultant, CUSTOM Cypress was chosen for its durability and light color. This material complements the PALAWAN Accoya® selected for soffits. Together, they create a beautiful harmony of tone and texture.
Project Results: The River Ranch stands as an architectural inspiration amongst architects and builders within the Sun Valley region, demonstrating quality and great craftsmanship. The use of Cypress and Accoya® wood, chosen for their beauty and natural resilience, proved to be a key factor in the project’s success. This positive experience has solidified the team’s confidence in using reSAWN’s materials for future projects.
