About the Project

Less than ten miles out of Washington, D.C., Arlington, VA is one of the largest D.C. suburbs with a sizable housing market. The Pollard Street Residence takes inspiration from many modern design themes with a large, open floor plan that allows natural light to flow into the home through expansive windows. Additionally, the inclusion of reSAWN’s NIGIRI shou sugi ban Accoya touches on the growing shift towards sustainably focused, natural wall cladding materials.

The general design of the project uses the natural tones of NIGIRI and the wood floors to allow bright and colorful accent pieces to bring life to the space. Specifically, the sitting area employs the grey of the shou sugi ban Accoya and sofa cushions to contrast the natural succulents and pink rug.

Accoya wood is the result of decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation to create a high performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications.  CHARRED shou sugi ban Accoya combines two naturally durable solutions. By significantly enhancing the durability and dimensional stability of fast-growing and abundantly available certified wood species, Accoya wood provides compelling environmental advantages over slow-growing hardwoods (which are often unsustainably sourced), woods treated with toxic preservative chemicals, and non-renewable carbon-intensive materials such as plastics, steel and concrete.
