Crafted for two residents, the Gray House borders a lush field creating tranquil scenery. To capitalize on the views of the field, Ted Porter Architects integrated large panes of southern-facing windows to fully showcase the landscape. The U-shaped layout maximizes the separation between the bedroom wings of each occupant, with shared spaces connecting these wings. The continuous gabled structure pays homage to the vernacular farm buildings prevalent in the area. Clad in charred SAMITTO Accoya®, it adds a sense of history and character to the home, complementing the town’s architectural style. Accoya®, renowned for its sleek charcoal aesthetic and minimal maintenance requirements, will age gracefully with the untouched landscape for decades to come.

SAMITTO by reSAWN TIMBER co. features charred Accoya® wood burnt with the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique. SAMITTO can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. Accoya® wood is the outcome of decades of research and development, combining a well-established and extensively proven wood modification technique with leading-edge patented technology – acetylation, delivering a high-performance wood solution for outdoor use and in challenging applications.

Project Needs: The clients prioritized durability, minimal upkeep, and consistent weathering for their cladding choice, aiming for a timeless aesthetic with a modern edge while respecting the surrounding protected landscape.

Project Solutions: The clients were impressed by the exterior cladding of the Boland Residence, a relative’s house nearby. They worked closely with a reSAWN Specification Consultant to review design options, samples, and installation guidelines for various charred Accoya® products. Among these options, SAMITTO stood out as the preferred choice due to its lighter charred appearance, improved durability, low maintenance needs, and 50-year warranty.

Project Results: The extensive benefits of Accoya® wood allowed the clients to confidently choose the right cladding material for their home. SAMITTO’s light charred appearance offers a modern yet weathered aesthetic, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape rather than detracting from it.
