The new Valle Crucis Elementary School in Boone, NC, is designed to foster 21st-century learning for 400 students in grades PK-8. Clark Nexsen envisioned the 75,000 sq. ft. facility with a two-story classroom wing and an activity wing—housing the cafeteria, gymnasium, and music classrooms—all converging at a central lobby. Emphasizing community integration and environmental connection, the design incorporates extensive natural light and mountain views, accessible outdoor learning areas, and CUSTOM Accoya exterior cladding that reflects the region’s rural character.

Accoya® wood is the result of decades of research and development, utilizing patented acetylation technology to create a high-performance, durable solution for outdoor and demanding applications. With a 50-year warranty against rot and decay, it offers exceptional stability, low maintenance, and resistance to warping, moisture, and UV exposure. Accoya Wood is an environmentally responsible choice that delivers longevity and a natural aesthetic for large-scale projects like Valle Crucis Elementary School.

Project Needs: The original Valle Crucis Elementary School had served the community for years but faced challenges with aging infrastructure and recurring flooding. To provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for 21st-century students, Clark Nexsen envisioned a completely new school and sought materials that would seamlessly integrate with the natural surroundings while enhancing the educational experience.

Project Solutions: After evaluating various wood samples and conducting an on-site mockup, the team selected custom Accoya for its alignment with their biophilic design vision. With a 50-year warranty, natural gray and earthy tones that complement the rugged topography, and low-maintenance qualities, it was the ideal choice. reSAWN’s specification consultant has visited the job site multiple times, providing expert guidance on installation best practices and addressing any team inquiries. This proactive support has streamlined the installation process, setting the building up for long-term success as it nears completion.

Project Results: The team was pleased with the installation process and is excited to see how the exterior will naturally weather alongside the school for years to come. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate on more inspiring projects with Clark Nexsen in the future.
