Along Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Baystone Retreat extends toward the Choptank River with an angular porch and uninterrupted views. Its contrasting material palette and framed shapes give the residence presence within its riverside setting, while charred wood creates an exterior that feels connected to place.

NIGIRI charred acetylated modified wood was selected for the exterior cladding, paired with OXFORD decking to carry a unified gray palette across the exterior living spaces. The project team was seeking natural wood that would require minimal maintenance, weather gracefully, and perform reliably within the subtropical climate.

During specification, RESAWN worked directly with the project teams to evaluate exterior cladding and decking options, including an on-site consultation and mock-ups. The dimensional stability and durability of acetylated modified wood, combined with the distinct finishes of NIGIRI and OXFORD, provided the performance characteristics needed while supporting the architect’s vision for a consistent, naturally weathered appearance.
