Less than a mile and a half from the Delaware River as the hawk flies, a stone farmhouse looks southeast from its protected setting against a wooded embankment. An old deed, certain features and recent research dates the core of the now-5900sf home to 1736, while subsequent expansion and modernization have altered it considerably.

Ernst Brothers partnered with John Wolstenholme (Wolstenholme Architects, Doylestown) to bring the farmhouse into the 21st century with new life as a handsome, classically appointed guest house for the 30-acre property’s new owners.

By removing all but the most appealing or necessary portions of the structure, the architect was able to creatively reduce the square footage to just shy of the 2500sf township zoning ordinance limit for a “guest house.” This adaptation allows the owners to build another, larger home on the parcel in the near future—and preserve what remains of the historic structure that originally anchored this former farmland property.

JENNINGS features CHARRED WESTERN RED CEDAR burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban.  JENNINGS can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding and is available in a select tight knot grade.

JENNINGS is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed and then stained/sealed.  The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the back side as well as the face).  The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.

CHARRED CEDAR features shou sugi ban charred western red cedar in a range of colors from a stark, vertical grain black to a knotty natural brown. Western red cedar has been used as a consistent and high performing exterior wood siding for hundreds of years. reSAWN’s CHARRED CEDAR can be used in similar exterior applications and interior wall/ceiling cladding.

EXPECT BEAUTIFUL WEATHERED WOOD
Our charring & sealing process makes for beautifully designed exterior wood siding.  Like any exterior wood siding prefinished or finished in place, these materials will weather naturally over time and will require maintenance.  For interior applications, expect little to no change.

reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban.  Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal.  Historically very specific in their definition, “shou-sugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general.  All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in our facility in Telford, PA.
