The Jo Residence is a stunning vacation home, situated in Guarujá – a city on Brazil’s southeastern coast just a few miles from the bustling capital of São Paulo. This city, known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” embodies Brazil’s coastal lifestyle, blending the beauty of its beaches with the energy of an urban environment. The Jo Residence epitomizes Guarujá’s relaxed elegance, offering a perfect escape for its residents.
Jacobsen Arquitetura designed The Jo Residence to be an immersive beachfront experience, blurring the lines between architecture and landscape. Verdant plants and natural materials in warm gray tones, such as timber, granite, and stone ensure the home feels like a natural extension of its environment. This commitment to natural elements is evident in the extensive use of charred and natural Accoya® wood from reSAWN TIMBER co. on both the exterior and interior. Accoya’s dimensional stability, aesthetic appeal, and 50-year warranty made it the ideal product for this Guarujá tropical coastal climate.
While seamlessly integrating with the landscape, the Jo Residence also ensures privacy from neighbors and beach activity through the use of wood screening. Jacobsen Arquitetura strategically placed charred wooden slats in front of the home’s floor-to-ceiling windows, shielding the bedrooms from the busy street while allowing ample sunlight. Leveled wooden slats on the sides of the house offer additional privacy and sun shading, reducing glare and heat gain for improved indoor comfort and energy efficiency.
To maximize flexibility, retractable vertical wooden slats allow residents to open or close rooms as needed, particularly in the master bedroom facing the beach. Accoya cladding extends from the exterior to the interior, creating a unified aesthetic. Variations in plank width visually distinguish rooms while maintaining a cohesive theme. Natural light enhances the cool gray tones and texture of the cladding, creating an inviting and tranquil environment.
The Jo Residence transcends the concept of a home, standing as an architectural masterpiece of innovative design. Every detail has been meticulously considered for sustainability and ease of maintenance, exemplified by reSAWN TIMBER co.’s prized gray Accoya®. This wood promises low maintenance and long-lasting durability, thanks to a patented acetylation process that makes it resistant to shrinkage and warping in harsh weather conditions. The charred Shou Sugi Ban layer further enhances the design, accentuating the wood’s natural beauty with added texture while offering superior protection against moisture, rot, and decay, and UV radiation.
