reSAWN :: Wood as a Sustainable Building Material

When thinking about wood as a sustainable building material, many people jump to the idea that manufacturing a finished wood product causes mass deforestation, a decrease of the total number of trees, and an increase of total carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. On the surface, it seems to be sound logic to think that more wood products equal more environmental harm, but wood is a living material that maintains the carbon dioxide it absorbed into its trunk as a tree throughout its product lifecycle as a building material.

In addition to the carbon dioxide removal benefits, wood is the only building material that creates no waste. When it’s manufactured with no toxins and finished with a natural stain, wood can be burned, which releases energy that replaces the use of coal, oil, and gas. Therefore, selecting wood–from certified sustainable sources–as a building material results in more total carbon dioxide absorption, less waste, and an increased importance on refurbishing the world’s forests.

reSAWN TIMBER co. is committed to consistently providing sustainable wood products for applications such as flooring, wall cladding, furniture, and exterior siding.  Most of our products are available as FSC®-Certified. Additionally, all reSAWN products qualify for LEED credits that range from rapidly renewable resource to low-emitting materials.

reSAWN’s CHARRED Accoya® collection  combines the company’s shou sugi ban wood charring technique with the specially modified Accoya® wood. Accoya® wood is the result of decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology. Additionally, the CHARRED Accoya® collection offers improved insulation characteristics compared to common hardwood and softwood species that make it ideal for energy conservation. All materials used in the manufacturing of the product are toxin free and may be reused, recycled, and incinerated.

reSAWN’s RECLAIMED wood is featured in various flooring, furniture, and CHARRED collections. With unique beauty that is preserved and celebrated, the reclaimed wood is a perfect example of wood’s sustainability and natural, aesthetic appeal. Antique American reclaimed woods are an ode to the American craftsmen of past generations who trusted in the durability and beauty of wood as a building material, which shows in the wood’s character marks. Originating from massive trees that grew slowly in pollution-free air and water, antique American reclaimed wood contains more heartwood, which is stronger and more durable than younger sapwood.

With deep roots in the sustainable organic farming community in Bucks County, PA – reSAWN is committed to being a business that values people, place and the environment. In an age when manufacturing is increasingly outsourced, reSAWN is proud to offer products made with domestic hardwoods and reclaimed woods from the USA.
