Three years after installation, the IKIGAI Shou Sugi Ban charred Accoya® exterior cladding and roofing on the Six Square House continues to exhibit remarkable performance. Despite exposure to diverse weather conditions, the cladding maintains its initial aesthetic, highlighting the exceptional durability and stability of Accoya wood. IKIGAI – FSC®-Certified, Shou Sugi Ban Accoya® wood can be used for interior or exterior cladding. IKIGAI is finished with a dark gray topcoat designed to protect the wall cladding as it naturally weathers over time. reSAWN’s award-winning charring technique adds depth and dimension to Accoya’s natural grain pattern. Accoya’s modification process eliminates the need to refinish the cladding. However, to get the day one look back, the IKIGAI top coat can be reapplied.

During summer 2023, VERSO Works transformed the Six Square House into a captivating art gallery, titling it ‘The Bridge’. VERSO Works is a traveling furniture and design gallery that seeks to reimagine conventional retail experiences through unique site-specific exhibitions. The exhibit features creative work from 36 designers and artists from countries around the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The 3,500 sq. ft. house offers an abundance of natural light and open areas making it an inviting environment for visitors and the perfect backdrop for the artwork. The exhibit gained attention from publications such as IFDM, Design Boom, and HypeBeast.

Six Square House is located in Bridgehampton, New York. The home is made of six 24’ x 24’ modules that all feature gabled geometry and a complex-looking roof design that’s shaped like an inverted V. The modules create a seamless and uninterrupted design between the roof and siding of the home. The simple exterior materials accentuate the roof geometry from all viewpoints. The roof composition translates into the home’s interior, creating six distinct areas.

The 3,500 square foot house contains two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, living spaces, an outdoor porch, and a garage. For entertaining, the living spaces open directly onto the yard, featuring a central court, meadow, and pool house. The kitchen looks into the triangular court, with views of the open porch and surrounding landscape.

IKIGAI by reSAWN TIMBER co. features charred Accoya wood burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban. IKIGAI can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. Accoya wood is the result of decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation to create a high-performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications.

This home sits on a highly exposed corner lot. The owners wanted to have privacy while taking advantage of natural light and exterior landscape. Incorporating the surrounding nature while still being private was a challenge, the finished result is a harmonious balance of nature, privacy, and design.

The rooms wrap around the centrally located garden and act as an outdoor living area. The secondary gardens and surrounding landscape have various native plants and trees that receive most of their irrigation through rainwater catch basins. Spaces are directed towards the lake, meadow, hills, and observatory views while also looking across the gardens. The exterior facade features reSAWN TIMBER co’s custom shou sugi ban charred cypress wood cladding.

The Garden House has expanded the international legacy of environmentally advanced architecture in Los Angeles by applying natural lighting, passive ventilation, water conservation, and many active technologies.

Situated at Lake Oswego, Oregon this modern residence features reSAWN’s NIGIRI charred Accoya wood. Inspired by a Southern California Aesthetic, this custom build home by Vanillawood aims to capture maximum natural light while taking advantage of the private wooded property. Dramatic architectural arches are repeated in the front and back.

Home to many Portland-area business leaders and professionals, Lake Oswego is known for its natural beauty, recreational and cultural amenities, and sense of community.

reSAWN takes great pride in designing products on high-performance, stable domestic softwoods and contemporary modified woods. Charring adds an extra layer of protection to wood’s structural durability. The process carbonizes the wood’s surface and creates an outer char layer that protects against rot, insects, and moisture related decay in exterior applications.

At Vanillawood they create, design, build and furnish spaces with an aesthetic that has been indelibly informed by their time living in Italy (where the husband and wife Co-Founders met), New York, Los Angeles and now Portland. ABOUT THE PROJECT

Located in Sharon, CT this residence features reSAWN TIMBER co. YOSHIMI Accoya shou sugi ban. Accoya® is wood, but not as you know it. It is a modified timber in which a process called acetylation, a cutting-edge patented technology, enables it to it resist rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades.

Performance and sustainability together are what makes Accoya so unique. The trees selected to make Accoya are sourced from fast growing, abundantly available sustainably certified forests. Accoya sustainable wood offers an alternative to slow growing and often unsustainable hardwoods, as well as many other carbon intensive and depleting materials such as plastics, aluminum and concrete.

The foundation of this family home in Sharon, CT, is a reclaimed barn. Ted Porter Architecture’s design included two addition to the original structure. With similar materials and form the additions follow a the contemporary design elements. The large windows allow for light-filled indoor spaces and showcase views of the surrounding landscape. YOSHIMI shou sugi ban charred FSC-Certified Accoya® wood siding on all the structures ties the individual house components together into a balanced ensemble.

Ted Porter Architecture (TPA) works on a wide range of projects: new construction; renovations; additions to historic structures; and interior design. Dedicated firm members closely work together to serve the various requirements of their valued Clients.

Buffalo, city and port, seat (1821) of Erie county, western New York, U.S. It is located where the eastern end of Lake Erie narrows into the Niagara River. New York’s second largest city, it is the metropolis of a large urban complex that includes the cities of Lackawanna, Lockport, Niagara Falls, and Tonawanda–North Tonawanda, as well as the towns of Amherst, Cheektowaga, Hamburg, Lancaster, and West Seneca. Lake Erie strongly affects Buffalo’s climate, moderating summer and winter temperatures and contributing much of the moisture that produces the city’s renowned heavy winter snowfalls.

Founded in 2002, MADE is an innovative design/build practice distinguished by their belief in integrating the architect and builder at every stage of the creative process. By combining a design studio, a fabrication workshop, and a contracting team under one roof, they offer a range of services unmatched by conventional architectural practices. Located on the prestigious Fairway Drive in Sun Valley, this design replaced a house from the late 1960’s. Designed in a mountain contemporary look the main social spaces and master suite are located on the second floor.

The most recent collaboration between Ross Barney Architects and McDonald’s unveils a Net-Zero Energy restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort, featuring over 15,000 sq. ft. of reSAWN’s HALLO shou sugi ban charred Kebony wood.

Aiming to become the first Net Zero Energy quick service restaurant, McDonald’s wanted to stick to its commitment to building a better future through “Scale for Good” when building this Disney Flagship location. Incorporating visible and impactful symbols of change, the restaurant deploys architecture and technology to firmly place itself in the future.

“Under a shed clad in solar panels, the restaurant is a sustainable and healthy response to the Florida climate. Energy consumption is reduced by optimizing building and kitchen systems. On-site generation strategies include: 18,727 square feet of photovoltaic panels, 4,809 square feet of glazing integrated photovoltaic panels (BiPV), and 25 off-the-grid parking lot lights produce more energy than the restaurant uses.” – Ross Barney Architects

Kebony shou sugi ban exterior siding is a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects. It is sustainable, durable, and requires no maintenance beyond normal cleaning. Kebony’s performance has been proven in a variety of applications including decking and cladding.

Developed in Norway, the Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly, patented process, which enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid. The process permanently modifies the wood cell walls giving Kebony premium hardwood characteristics and a rich brown color. After exposure to sun and rain, the wood develops a natural silver-gray patina.

Stuart and Kelly Josberger and their two friends, Mark and Trish Oliphant realized the potential of their backyard barbecue axe throwing game and brought it to the public. Customers can safely hurl hatchets for fun and friendly competition at Stumpy’s Hatchet house, a cozy cabin and rustic aesthetic cabin at a location near you.

reSAWN’s custom charred cypress interior cladding was specified for Stumpy’s in Princeton, NJ., which adds to the locations woodland aesthetic. reSAWN’s shou sugi ban charred cypress is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed and then stained/sealed. The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the back side as well as the face). The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light. Our products are made with cypress sourced from the Southern United States and can be used for interior wall cladding, ceiling cladding and exterior siding. With its legendary beauty and natural durability, cypress has long been a staple as an exterior wood siding product. Because cypress generates its own preservative oil, called cypressene, it’s an ideal wood for locations with constant heat, humidity, and torrential rains.

Our charring & sealing process makes for beautifully designed exterior wood siding. Like any exterior wood siding prefinished or finished in place, these materials will weather naturally over time and will require maintenance. For interior applications, expect little to no change.

reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban. Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal. Historically very specific in their definition, “shou-sugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general. All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in our facility in Telford, PA.
