Storm King Art Center’s first major capital project reshaped the visitor experience in response to recent growth and supported its mission of connecting art, nature, and people. The new buildings, collectively known as the Welcome Pavilions, frame the arrival for guests while restoring a former parking lot to five acres of meadows.

The reimagined structures, which include a ticketing center, restrooms, and group gathering spaces, are defined by a minimal footprint and sustainably sourced materials that reflect Storm King’s environmental stewardship and conservation. The pavilions are clad in 22,000 linear feet of PATINA Abodo Vulcan cladding, a thermally modified, sustainable wood that was chosen for its stability and ability to weather into a natural gray that will settle the structures into the landscape over time.

To maintain consistent performance and material compatibility, we custom fabricated wood fins and beams, milled to specification and finished with a CUSTOM color developed to match the PATINA cladding. Working closely with reSAWN’s Specification Consultant and technical experts, the design team evaluated samples and on-site field mockups to confirm texture, tone, and installation details. Guided by the principle of building only what’s essential, the project relied on precisely crafted components that reduced waste and delivered long-term durability and a peaceful aesthetic among the surrounding artwork.

Rooted in the client’s deep connection to the landscape, and years spent exploring its wooded trails, Valley View is a 10,000 sq. ft. custom residence that celebrates the beauty and geological character of Ada, MI. Positioned on the highest point of the 33-acre property, the home captures sweeping views of the surrounding Grand River Watershed.

Blending contemporary design with simplicity and natural elements, Valley View draws inspiration from homes that have long been part of the region. Large stone chimney stacks, minimal ornamentation, and vertical wood cladding nod to the past while ensuring the home ages gracefully over time.

Technical Support and Highlights

To balance elegance and authenticity with longevity, the design team prioritized materials that would age beautifully with efficiency and durability. Looking for a natural material palette that would complement the site’s character, the design team partnered with reSAWN TIMBER co. to select over 13,000 sq. ft. of CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan Cladding for the exterior. Highlights of the solution include:

• Material Selection: Various samples of our modified wood cladding products were sent to the project team to evaluate and test compatibility with other design elements. After narrowing the selection to nine different products, we crafted and delivered several onsite mockups where they were left out through the winter to expose the products to climate variation and observe long-term performance. The project team selected a CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan Cladding with a unique, textured surface that opens the wood grain to allow finish to deeply penetrate the wood for superior weathering and a rich color that maintains design integrity over time.
• Tailored Project Coordination: We provided a custom selection of fixed-length boards in six varying sizes, ranging from 9’10” to 15’98” in length. The material shipments were sent in two separate phases to align with the construction schedule and allow the builder to secure the material in advance while efficiently managing site storage and workflows.
• Technical Guidance: reSAWN’s technical team supplied comprehensive installation guidelines that included fastener recommendations and maintenance instructions to support lasting performance.

The project team is happy with the outcome, citing it as one of their proudest accomplishments. Kenowa Builders continues to partner with reSAWN, with two new projects currently in production.

Situated on four expansive acres of open fields in Harrington, DE, the Harrington Public Library rises above the landscape in a striking fusion of modern architecture and rural charm. The brand-new, 15,000 square foot library has become a destination for members of the community, who have long awaited an upgrade to their previous facility. The new space has allowed for an expansion of community programs and features private study rooms, additional computers, space dedicated to teenagers, and a courtyard for visitors to enjoy reading outdoors.

Clad in STERLING FSC®-Certified Abodo®, the clean, monochromatic exterior contrasts beautifully with the warm, natural tones of the interior. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite the outdoors in, allowing natural light to flow through the state-of-the-art facilities.

Tucked away on nearly 8 acres in the coveted Colony at White Pine Canyon, Aspen Meadows is a dream mountain retreat in Park City, UT. Surrounded by old-growth forests, serene lakes, and cascading waterfalls, this residence invites its residents to indulge in the ultimate alpine escape. With over 8,000 sq.ft. of CUSTOM Abodo Vulcan cladding and slats, the home blends into its wooded surroundings, appearing as if it has always been part of the landscape. 

Abodo® Vulcan thermally modified wood cladding is crafted from sustainably sourced New Zealand plantation timber and engineered with a patented vertical grain orientation for enhanced weather resistance. reSAWN TIMBER co.’s Abodo Fine Sawn Face Vulcan cladding features a distinctive textured surface that highlights the depth of the wood grain. This fine sawn texture opens the wood grain to allow for optimal coating performance. The thermal modification process, combined with the vertical grain structure, ensures superior stability and reduces resin content, making Vulcan cladding exceptionally durable.

Project Needs: Sparano + Mooney sought a durable, low-maintenance cladding solution that complemented the rugged landscape. Given the area’s fluctuating climate, they required a material that could withstand these conditions.

Project Solutions: Inspired by reSAWN’s weathered STRAW sample, the architect requested a custom color that achieved a similar aesthetic. The reSAWN team collaborated closely with the architect and builder to create custom color samples and a field mockup to finalize the selection. For the sleek slat walls, sections were pre-assembled on the ground using aluminum channels, with hidden screws securing the wood from behind. This approach achieved the design’s clean lines and modern aesthetic.

Project Results: The outcome of Aspen Meadows has been met with enthusiasm. The architect and client are thrilled with the cohesive design, while the builder praised the high performance and workability of Abodo wood. The project has become a standout in the area, celebrated for its attention to detail and integration with the stunning natural surroundings.

Wrapped in warm, natural Abodo® Vulcan cladding, the tiered, three-story structure complements its rugged surroundings while framing sweeping mountain views. The carefully selected wood enhances the home’s organic character, allowing it to feel rooted in the landscape yet distinctly modern.
