Hillsborough Compound – Hillsborough, CA
DETAILS
Architect: Scheinholtz Associates
Builder: Wilkinson Construction
The Hillsborough compound sits just south of San Francisco in California’s Bay Area. The home balances warmth and modernity, pairing a natural wood façade with clean architectural lines and expansive contemporary spaces. Fresh material channels light from the kitchen ceiling cutout to the soffits on the outdoor sitting area. The same material frames the living room fireplace, extending upward to the vaulted ceiling.
As the project specifier, the architect sought a clean, modern aesthetic and an exterior product that would maintain the building’s primary color even after direct exposure to the sun. They had used our products before and were highly satisfied with the results. IKIGAI, shou sugi ban, and a CUSTOM cladding were chosen for the exterior façade. As thermally modified products, they became an efficient solution for withstanding environmental conditions.
MASON Western Hemlock was used for the interior wall and ceiling cladding, then extended to the protected exterior soffits to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Carefully placed throughout the design, the material helped bring the architect’s vision to life. Our specification consultant sent samples as well as mock-ups of various products. With six mock-ups sent, the specifier evaluated which products would deliver the modern build they were looking for in the design. Exterior installation guidelines were provided to the team with helpful technical support.
