In the Tennyson neighborhood of Denver, CO, a new home designed by Meridian 105 Architecture emphasizes privacy, openness, and natural light. Known as The Lighthouse, this architectural gem features a striking modern design with a unique diagonal upper story that serves as the central axis of its design. The angled structure optimizes both usable space on the compact city lot and the amount of direct sunlight received. The charred Shou Sugi Ban Accoya® wood exterior cladding by reSAWN TIMBER co. enhances the home’s aesthetic, adding warmth and character that perfectly complements its urban surroundings. The result is a stunning and inviting space that maximizes its compact urban setting.

Charred NIGIRI Accoya® wood is crafted using the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The outer layer of the wood is charred, and when combined with the modified Accoya® species, it results in a material that is dimensionally stable, durable, and low maintenance. This makes it an ideal choice for builders and architects seeking high-quality exterior cladding in the Rocky Mountain region. 

Project Needs: Meridian 105 Architects sought a high-performing material requiring minimal to no maintenance. Aiming for a cohesive aesthetic, they wanted the material to extend seamlessly from the roof to the exterior cladding. Inspired by reSAWN’s portfolio of wooden roof cladding, they decided to explore our selection.

Project Solutions: A Denver based reSAWN specification consultant collaborated closely with the project’s architects and contractors. By thoroughly reviewing architectural drawings and installation guides, and offering roofing installation advice, we equipped the team with comprehensive product expertise. After meticulously examining various samples, weathering guides, and the project’s mockup, we successfully guided them in selecting NIGIRI Charred Accoya, a choice that will enhance the project’s aesthetic and durability. 

Project Results: The Lighthouse stands as a renowned project that redefines the boundaries of modern architecture in the Rocky Mountain region. The clients are extremely satisfied with the aesthetic and weathering performance and are excited to see its progress for the years to come.

Designed by Hanson Fine Building as their second Certified Passive House, the residence features off-site prefabrication of walls, cladding, floors, and roof assemblies. This method enhances precision, reduces waste, and improves both energy efficiency and construction quality. The design integrates geothermal and solar energy systems, prioritizing healthy materials, indoor air quality, and low embodied carbon. The owner’s commitment to art and innovative architecture is evident in the choice of Shou Sugi Ban charred Accoya for the exterior cladding. Shou Sugi Ban adds a distinctive aesthetic while also aligning with passive design principles through its durability, carbon sequestration, and low maintenance requirements, ensuring longevity and minimal environmental impact.

Project Needs: For this project, the clients were seeking a high-quality, low-maintenance product that met passive house requirements. The goal was to create a building that uses minimal energy for heating and cooling while maintaining a consistently comfortable living environment year-round.

Project Solutions: The clients selected reSAWN for our premium, low-maintenance wood products. They were particularly impressed by the natural beauty and durability of CUSTOM Charred Accoya, which features a distinctive black Shou Sugi Ban finish. CUSTOM Accoya’s enhanced thermal performance, achieved through its low thermal conductivity and insulation properties, was a key factor in their decision. The charring process creates a protective layer on the wood that reduces heat transfer, helping to maintain consistent indoor temperatures and perfectly aligning with their Passive House goals.

Perched atop a scenic vineyard in Sonoma County’s historic Alexander Valley, the Soda Rock Project embodies California Modernism. Lush vegetation, expansive outdoor spaces, and a natural wood facade create a sophisticated yet comfortable retreat, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The left wing of the house, clad in charred Accoya®—a specially treated wood known for its exceptional durability and resistance to the elements—overlooks an infinity pool that seems to melt into the sun-drenched vineyards beyond. The wood tones complement the lush greenery and mimic the textures of nearby grapevines and river streams.

The Soda Rock Project’s exterior features a CUSTOM charred Accoya® wood cladding, crafted using the ancient Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique by reSAWN TIMBER co. Project Needs: Inspired by reSAWN TIMBER co.’s Shou Sugi Ban product line, the architect met with a specification consultant to delve deeper into our offerings. After reviewing several species and finish options, Accoya® emerged as the ideal choice to fulfill the architect’s vision for the project.

Project Solutions: Zimmerman Architects ordered a variety of samples and a 30 sq.ft. mock-up to review several Charred Accoya® products. Through careful observation and discussions with a local specification consultant, they selected a custom finish that best suited their desired aesthetics. Accoya’s warranty and natural durability were key factors in their decision.

Project Results: The meticulous selection of Accoya® wood brought the architect’s vision to life for the Soda Rock Project. By providing the client with comprehensive product information, they successfully achieved their design goals and delivered a project that exceeded expectations. Private patios on each level take advantage of the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The exterior showcases over 5,300 sq. ft. of charred Accoya®, adding dimension and character to the design. The charring process highlights the wood’s natural grain, creating a beautiful textural contrast against the smooth glass and rough concrete. The architect firm, Asher Slaunwhite + Partners, intentionally chose charred Accoya® exterior cladding for its aesthetics, 50-year warranty, and superior durability against the coastal climate. This modified wood offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and timeless character that the clients desire.
