This traditional shingle style home in Greenwich was transformed into a modern European style open floor plan designed by Tanner White Architects and built by Gatehouse Partners.

In the daylight, Blur is a shadow that seems to float above the ground, a dark silhouette countered by the light that lives inside. In the cloak of evening, Blur projects its warm reflection of a home onto a dark hillside.

The art consultant homeowners experience the balance in contrast, the push and pull of their mountain home. The juxtaposing identity of the structure that blurs the line between interior and exterior, rugged and refined, but lacks nothing in transition. The interior space, enwrapped in white and accented by simple finishes, remains inviting and soft, while a fireproof wood exterior and durable sheath of lustrous metal wrap the outside like a cocoon, ready to counter the harsh environment of the mountains that it reflects. From the plan to the finished piece, the structure is a crowning point for Modernist ideas in architecture, a match of minimalism and unbridled functionality for a family home. A couple and two children reside comfortably in a uniform upper floor that creates a natural cohesion of fine art decoration and homestead, a working collaboration of high-end house and home, friend gatherings welcome. From the driveway to the front step, the natural undulation and variance of the home is something to behold, an experience that only can be truly appreciated standing on white oak floors, looking out on the Colorado mountain landscape from within Blur Residence.

The exterior of the residence is clad in reSAWN’s DUNCAN 2.0, which features Charred Western Red Cedar burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban. DUNCAN 2.0 can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding and is standardly select tight knot grade. DUNCAN 2.0can be treated to Class A Fire Rating for Interior Application.

DUNCAN 2.0is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed, and then stained/sealed. The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the backside as well as the face). The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.

Our charring & sealing process makes for beautifully designed exterior wood siding. Like any exterior wood siding prefinished or finished in place, these materials will weather naturally over time and will require maintenance. For interior applications, expect little to no change.

Daisy Jacobs ‘studio’, located on an open field in the forests of Vermont, US is a reclusive space to think, paint or write, that offers protection from and exposure to nature at the same time.

DAISY JACOBS was founded in 2016 by Daisy Jacobs and is based in Bern, Switzerland. The studio designs and builds architecture projects and produces art and written works as theoretical research into architecture, space and current cultural conditions. They believe in creating architecture out of its foundation in art, philosophy, craftsmanship and the human body. The approach to the projects is based on the one hand, on the search for the relationships between the human body and its surrounding space. On the other hand, on the impact and possibilities that lie within setting a line, a border or a building into an urban or natural landscape.

Planned to provide a getaway for writers and artists, the cabin is clad with reSAWN’s MATSU shou sugi ban charred Accoya and can entirely open up to the hilly green landscape, while its interior is as white as an empty canvas.

The interior cladding and the built-in furniture were made out of rough sawn timber, the floor was poured as part of the foundation and the exterior facade was clad in reSAWN’s weather-proof burnt Accoya. The Studio is a simple timber frame construction with the roof built out of engineered timber joists. That way the traditional building techniques could be used for this contemporary building.

The studio has been featured in Design Boom, Arch Daily, and Archello.

The concept picks up and enforces the transition from the protective pine trees towards the wide opening into the landscape. The spatial experience creates a continuous balancing act between the perceptions of being lost in nature and being protected by a defined architectural framework.

The most recent collaboration between Ross Barney Architects and McDonald’s unveils a Net-Zero Energy restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort, featuring over 15,000 sq. ft. of reSAWN’s HALLO shou sugi ban charred Kebony wood.

Aiming to become the first Net Zero Energy quick service restaurant, McDonald’s wanted to stick to its commitment to building a better future through “Scale for Good” when building this Disney Flagship location. Incorporating visible and impactful symbols of change, the restaurant deploys architecture and technology to firmly place itself in the future.

“Under a shed clad in solar panels, the restaurant is a sustainable and healthy response to the Florida climate. Energy consumption is reduced by optimizing building and kitchen systems. On-site generation strategies include: 18,727 square feet of photovoltaic panels, 4,809 square feet of glazing integrated photovoltaic panels (BiPV), and 25 off-the-grid parking lot lights produce more energy than the restaurant uses.” – Ross Barney Architects

Developed in Norway, the Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly, patented process, which enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid. The process permanently modifies the wood cell walls giving Kebony premium hardwood characteristics and a rich brown color. After exposure to sun and rain, the wood develops a natural silver-gray patina.

Denver’s River North Arts District, better known as RiNo, began as a grass roots movement to connect local art organizations. In a neighborhood with small craft breweries, coffee shops, and restaurants, the 3011 Lawrence project mixes a modern, industrial style with natural HADAKA shou sugi ban wood siding to create a residence that recognizes the local art scene and sustainability movement.

With a double lot sized property, 3011 Lawrence is designed to maximize both and indoor spaces. The project features wide, three level front and back sections that allow for ample living areas while the middle section is narrow with high ceilings. On the exterior, the house utilizes an industrial aesthetic with shipping containers, HADAKA shou sugi ban, and concrete. The backyard includes the original property’s outer brick wall and an in ground trampoline.

Featured in Residential Design – CASE STUDY :: The Shimmer on the Lake

About the Project

Overlooking the Brown Bays of Lake Minnetonka, the Wayzata Residence captures a lake house aesthetic with a light, airy color pallet and a natural, wood facade with reSAWN’s NIGIRI shou sugi ban Accoya. The private home takes advantage of the waterside views with large windows, an open deck, and a west-facing balcony that provides a winter view to Lake Minnetonka. Form meets function with transition spaces that allow the front of the house to act as a sound barrier with storage and utility areas while the back, lake facing portion of the house maximizes exposure to nature and relaxation.

To further the transitional elements of the home, Snow Kreilich specified two different widths and milling profiles of NIGIRI shou sugi ban Accoya, and the mitered corners created seamless, rectangular angles. Additionally, the gray facade combined with the white interior and exterior accents created a simple, lake house essence. Describing the project, Snow Kreilich write, “…the facade and interior finishes give the house a casual lake house atmosphere, fit for both large and intimate gatherings where visitors can admire the lake and surrounding landscaped site from the expansive patios and open living spaces.”

Accoya wood is the result of decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation to create a high performance wood, ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications. CHARRED shou sugi ban Accoya combines two naturally durable solutions. By significantly enhancing the durability and dimensional stability of fast-growing and abundantly available certified wood species, Accoya wood provides compelling environmental advantages over slow-growing hardwoods (which are often unsustainably sourced), woods treated with toxic preservative chemicals, and non-renewable carbon-intensive materials such as plastics, steel and concrete.

Snow Kreilich Architects is a nationally recognized and award winning architectural studio based practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The studio was formerly Julie Snow Architects, founded in 1995 by Julie Snow. Featured in The New York Times – The Long-Term Beach House

Located a block from the beach in Montauk, NY, this home was designed to promote family interaction with easy flow between indoor and outdoor activities and clear sight lines across large sections of the home.

The house facade is a combination of exposed concrete and reSAWN’s IRUKA shou sugi ban charred cypress. The color and texture of IRUKA helped reference vernacular Montauk architecture while articulating an iconic, crisp, modern form. The wood wraps into the interiors, framing the living spaces on the upper floor and cascading down the staircase to the family room.

IRUKA features CHARRED CYPRESS burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban. IRUKA can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. For exterior cladding, we offer Select Grade. For interior applications, we offer #2 common and Select Grade. The higher the grade, the better it is felt the wood will perform, especially in exterior applications.

On a quiet block in Manhattan Beach, CA, the 21st Street residence garners immediate attention for its lush, green landscaping and use of HOWAITO shou sugi ban exterior siding. The property maintains a small footprint, but it’s noticeable for a clear commitment to color contrasts and sustainability. In addition to charred shou sugi ban siding, the residence’s exterior captures the setting California sun with an abundance of large windows.

Perhaps more visually intriguing than the natural wood siding, design and build firm Beach House Design & Development included a garage door, gate, and fence crafted out of HOWAITO shou sugi ban charred cypress. HOWAITO’s juxtaposition with the white features of the house highlights the charred wood’s texture and color variation. Just two blocks up from the Pacific Ocean, this Manhattan Beach, CA residence embodies the region’s architecture with large windows, natural materials, and a modern aesthetic. The beach house takes advantage of the ocean climate with multi-level wrap around porches that include chairs pointing towards the setting sun. With a focus on sustainability and natural materials, design and build firm, Beach House Design and Development specified reSAWN’s IRUKA shou sugi ban exterior siding.

Due to narrow beachfront lots, many Manhattan Beach properties take on a similar slender, rectangular shape. The shape allows homeowners to maximize interior square footage with a reduced footprint. The Beach House Design & Development home rises slightly over the other homes with its open two-story foyer that complements the 3-story entry glass curtain wall.
