Crown Properties, Inc. and DC architecture firm Wingate Hughes recently partnered with Martone Construction on a 6,700 SF sub-level amenity space design at 1110 Vermont Ave, NW. They envisioned a dynamic, multi-use area for building occupants to retreat from daily life stresses, entertain clients, hold conferences, and hang with colleagues. The original design inspiration began with tree houses and playing with degrees of height and evolved into an urban oasis filled with California vibes and straightforward, raw elements, and incorporated reSAWN’s SORA shou sugi ban charred cypress.

The amenity space is a place to decompress and zen out — definitely a unique offering in DC’s commercial real estate market. The floating meditation room’s SORA shou sugi ban charred cypress siding conveys natural inspiration, and the frosted glass gives privacy for yoga and meditation. The perimeter rock garden and projected diffused-glow lights enhance the room’s introspective, calming feel.

The skater ramp lounge provides ample places to sit and works as tiered event seating or chill-out spots for lunch and casual conversations while the custom bar with built-in microwave, beverage fridge, and power strips has everything needed for an event or remote working.

SORA by reSAWN TIMBER co. features CHARRED CYPRESS burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban.  SORA can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding and is available in select grade or #2 common grade cypress.  The higher the grade, the better it is felt the wood will perform, especially in exterior applications.

SORA is carefully charred, misted with water, cooled, brushed and then stained/sealed.  The top coat sealer is applied prior to shipping (for exterior applications, we recommend sealing the back side as well as the face).  The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light.

SORA is made with cypress sourced from the Southern United States and can be used for interior wall cladding, ceiling cladding and exterior siding.

reSAWN’s CHARRED offering features cypress, western red cedar, Accoya, Kebony, black walnut, red oak, white oak and reclaimed hemlock that is burnt in the Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban.  Our award-winning CHARRED products pay homage to the traditional Japanese technique of “shou-sugi-ban” aka “yakisugi” without being literal.  Historically very specific in their definition, “shou-sugi-ban” and “yakisugi” have become common nomenclature for modern charred wood designs in general.  All of reSAWN’s CHARRED products are made in the USA, in our facility in Telford, PA.
